M.-A. PENN-BY.
I BRAKE SHOE. N0. 471,891. Patented Mar. 29. 1892.
- WITNESSES: INVENTOH BYW ZCZ A TTOHNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARK A. 'PENNEY, OF PERRIS, CALIFORNIAL BRAKE-SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,891, dated March 29, 1892. Application filed November 19,1891. Serial No. 412,406. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARK A. PENNEY, of Perris, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Shoe for lVagon-Brakes, of which the following is a specification, reference Joeing' and provided in the face thereof with a recess for receiving blocks of wood or other material to form the frictional face of the brake, all as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The brake shoe body A is formed of a curved casting conforming to the curvature of the rim of the wheel to which the brake is to be applied. The back of the casting is provided with an arm a for attachment to the brake-bar b. In the face of the casting is formed a recess 0, which extends from the u pper end thereof to a ledge d at the lower end, and the side walls of the recess are furnished with inwardly-projecting flanges 6, having sufiicient width to retain in the recess the blocks B, used for the friction -surface or brake. The said blocks B are preferably made of hard wood; but they may be made of metal, rawhide, or other material suited to the purpose. The lower block rests upon the ledge d, and a rod or bolt f, passing transversely through the upper end of the shoebody A, retains the block in the recess 0. The arm a is secured to the brake-bar b by means of bolts, and the said bar, when the brake is applied, presses against the shoulder g, formed on the shoe-body. The flanges e, formed on the shoe-body, are beveled and rounded on their inner edges to facilitate the application of the shoe to the wheel-rim.
Vhen the blocks B are worn so as to become unserviceable, they may be removed from the body A and replaced by a new one after withdrawing the rod f.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A brake-shoe holder A, formed of a single casting and having on its inner face at opposite edges thereof integral inwardly-projecting flanges e, stop-ledge d, and an external attaching-flange, the upper end of the recess 0, formed by the flanges 6, being open'to receive and permit the removal of the brake-blocks, substantially as set forth.
MARK A. PENNEY.
