A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT I-IERMANCE, OF SCHUYLERSVILLE, NEW YORK.
TUBULAR LANTERN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,538, dated June 4, 1889.
Serial No. 279,823. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, ROBERT HERMANCE, a citizen of t-he United States, residing at Schu ylersville, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tubular Lanterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective View of my improved tubular lantern, and Fig. 2 a side elevation showing the supporting-.yoke elevated in dotted lines.
The present invention has relation to certain newand useful improvements in tubular lanterns; and the object thereof is to provide such a lantern as will be simple in construction and capable of manufacture at a comparatively small cost, so as to bring it within the reach of all; and it consists in the d etails of construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the reservoir of the lantern for containing the oil, and it is provided with a feeder B, having a screw-cap a, through which the res- The feeder, as will be noticed, is placed on the side of the reservoir, so that the latter can be filled without removing the globe. The lantern is provided with the usual tubes C, extending horizontally from the reservoir and communicating with the upright tubes D, which in turn communicate with the horizontal tube E, and depending therefrom is a short tube F, to which is connected the stationary dome G,
the tube E having attached thereto the wire bail H.
The several parts as above described may be variously modified or changed in construction without departing from the principle of my invention.
The globe-rest I is provided with a guide J, preferably constructed of wire, so that when the globe K is raised and afterward lowered the device J will guide it down to its place 011 the rest. It is .also of value to prevent the globe from being jarred 0E the rest.
To the wire guard L is connected in any suitable manner a wire yoke M, retained in a raised or lowered position by a spring-actuating device. The most preferable manner of connecting the yoke to the guard L is by forming an eye at one end of the wire by bending it around the wire forming the guard, and coiling the opposite end of the wire yoke around the wire guard, as shown at b. The extremity of the wire coil terminates in a finger c, which bears against a flat spring N, secured at one end to one of the upright tubes D. Although I considerthe construction shown the most desirable form of a spring-actuating device, it is evident any form of spring device may be substituted that will act on the wire yoke to retain it in a raised or lowered position.
The wire guard, which is fastened to the tubes D, forms a pivot for the yoke M, and when it is desired to remove the globe the yoke M is raised, as shown in dotted lines, and held in suchposition by the spring hereinbefore described, when the globe can be conveniently removed. Then the globe is placed back in position, the yoke -is turned down, as shown in full lines, the spring retaining it in the position placed, the guard or support L, in connection with the yoke M, securely holding'the globe in an upright position' on the rest I.
Having now fully. described my invention,
vwhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with the globe of a lantern, of the restI and the guide J, connected at one end to the top of said rest, with the other end inclined toward the center of the rest, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a lantern, the combination, with the globe-rest thereof, of a wire attached at one end to the top of said rest near its periphery, and comprising a substantially vertical portion forming a stop and a radial portion forming a guide and extending toward the center of the rest, substantially as shown and described.
