J aid/Jada fizverzfom" N. PETERS, Fholoihhngn'pher. Wishingwn. D4 (2 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. BAKER AND CHARLES E. BAKER, OF FINDLAY, OHIO.
COMBINED WRENCH AND PISTON-LUBRICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,408, dated May 14, 1889. Application filed January 30,1889. Serial No. 298,073. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, THOMAS J. BAKER and CHARLES E. BAKER, citizens of the United States, residing at Findlay, in the county of Hancock and State of Ohio, have invented a Combined rench and Piston-Lubricator, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to construct a lubricator in such a manner that it may form the main arm of a wrench for turning the follower of a stufling-box.
Another object of our invention is to provide means for suspending the hanger.
Our improvements consist in novel features of construction hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In order that our invention may be fully understood, we will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is a side elevation, partly in section, showing our combined lubricator and wrench applied to a steam-cylinder head. Fig. II is a transverse section of the same on the line II II, Fig. I. Fig. III is a front View showing combined lubricator and wrench removed from the piston-rod and suspended from a hanger provided for the purpose, the divided gland being open. Fig. IV is a perspective view of the slotted hanger.
The lubricator is constructed with a hollow divided gland, 1, surrounding the piston-rod 7, and hinged at 1, so as to be capable of application and removal and to permit the introduction of fresh waste or other capillary material, which is contained in the hollow gland in contact with the piston-rod and serves to retain the oil, which is supplied to the interior of said gland through a vertical tube, 3, at the top of which is an oil-cup, a. The hollow gland 1 is retained in position around the piston-rod by a latch, 1*, or other suitable fastening.
To adapt our device for use in screwing up or unscrewing the follower 8 of the stuffingbox 8, we employ a semicircular or segmental guide, 2, connected to an arm, 5, which is provided with a sleeve, 5, at its upper end, and mounted on the lubricator-tube 3, and fixed in any position thereon by a set-screw, 5
The arm 5, projecting through the semicircular guide 2, engages in one of the notches 2 in the periphery of the stufling-box follower 8. The tube 3 thus serves as the handle of the wrench in turning the follower forward or back.
For supporting the combined lubricator and wrench and adapting them to be removed from the piston-rod and stufling-box and turned back out of the way when desired, we employ a horizontally-slotted hanger, 9, projecting from the cylinder-head 10, and a rigid arm, 11, projecting from the lubricator-tube 3, and secured adjustably to the hanger 9 by a clamp-screw, 12. The screw 12 may be removed so as to detach the tubular handle 3 from the supporting-bracket 9 when the lubricator is to be used as a wrench, or the pivotconnection afforded by the screw 12 between the arm 11 of the lubricator-screw and the slotted hanger 9 may permit a slight angular movement of the lubricator around the piston-rod, while the outward movement of the sleeve 5 on the lubricator-tube permits the disengagement of the arm from the notch, the guide to be turned back on the follower, and the arm to be engaged in a new notch therein as often as necessary. By loosening the screw 12 and unfastening the latch 1 the gland 1 of the lubricator may be moved forward by reason of slot 0 in hanger 9, opened on its hinge, and turned round out of the way and completely clear of the pistonrod, exposing the interior of the lubricator, for supplying it with packing or for other purposes, and it will hang in this position until put back in place.
Having thus described our invention, the following is what we claim as new therein and desire to secureby Letters Patent:
1. A lubricating device comprising the divided and hinged gland 1, a tube, 3, and a filling-cup, 4, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the lubricator having a tube, 3, provided with an arm, 11, the hanger 9, and the slot and set-screw connection between the arm and hanger, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the lubricator having a tube, 3, the stuffing=box follower 8, having notches 2, the adjustable arm 5, having sleeve 5, and the guide 2, substantially as described.
