Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD FRID, OF NEWV HAMBURG, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, AND HARRY JONES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMPOUND FOR RESTORING THE COLOR OF BROWN LEATHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,731, dated May 7, 1889.
Application filed November 26, 1888. Serial No. 291,891. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD FRID, of New Hamburg, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Compound for Restoring Brown Leather, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has for its object to provide a compound for cleaning brown leather and restoring its original color.
My composition consists of the following ingredients combined in the proportions stated: water, one quart; oxalic acid, one ounce; saffron, one ounce.
The oxalic acid and the saffron, in the pro portions mentioned, are dissolved in a quart of boiling water, and the mixture allowed to cool. This liquid mixture is then applied to brown leather by means of a brush or other suitable means, and upon drying it will be found that all stains and discoloration of the leather will have been removed and the leather restored to its original color. The leather may then be polished by applying a small quantity of paste and rubbing it with a soft brush.
The paste preferably employed in polishing the cleaned russet leather consists of the following ingredients combined in the proportions stated, viz: turpentine, twenty ounces; beeswax, ten ounces; nitro-benzole,
twelve drops. These ingredients are permit ted to simmer over a fire for half an hour; The above-mentioned proportions, combined as stated, yield about a pint and a half of the paste.
I lay no claim in this application to the polishing paste above mentioned, as it forms the subject of an application pending herewith and filed by me January 16, 1889, Serial No. 296,556.
This invention will be found very efficacious in cleaning and restoring to its original color all kinds of brown leather, such as russet boots and shoes and harness.
The oxalic acid in this compound cleans russet leather, removing all stains and discoloration therefrom, while the saffron gives to the leather its original yellow or russet color.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The herein-described composition of matter to be used for cleaning and restoring brown leather, consisting of oxalic acid and saffron dissolved in boiling water, in the proportions specified.
