Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES WALLACE, 013 LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
CLEANING AND POLISHING COMPOSITION.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES WALLACE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cleaning and Polishing Compositions; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to cleaning and polishing' compounds, and its primary object is the provision of a compound of this character which shall be especially adapted for cleaning, polishing and restoring the varnished and enameled surfaces of an automobile.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a polishing and cleaning compound which will readily and quickly remove dirt, grease and spots from varnish and enameled surfaces, which will restore such surfaces to their natural colors and luster, which will fill up any scratches and small broken places in such surfaces, and which will be water and dust-proof.
My compound preferably consists of dis tilled water, denatured alcohol, parafiin oil, acetic acid, antimony trichlorid, oil of mirbane and amaranth in solution. These ingredients are compounded in the following proportions, to wit: distilled water fourteen ounces; denatured alcohol five ounces; parafiin oil four ounces; acetic acid (thirty-six per cent. solution) one-half ounce; antimony trichlorid one dram; oil of mirbane three drams, and solution of amaranth twenty drops.
The ingredients are thoroughly mixed in any suitable manner. The parafiin oil and butter of antimony are fillers and preservers. The denatured alcohol serves to remove all spots of grease and similar substances, and the alcohol and acetic acid coact to insure ready spreading of the paraffin oil and quick drying of the compound so that the surface being cleaned may be quickly and easily polished with but little rubbing. The mirbane is used to give the compound a pleasant odor, and the amaranth is used for coloring purposes.
It is to be understood that the ingredients Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 8, 1918. Serial No. 221,194.
of my compound may be mixed in other proportions than those stated herein, and it is also to be understood that the compound may be used for cleaning and polishing varnished and enameled surfaces of articles and structures other than automobiles.
In view of the fact that all acids are known to have a highly injurious effect upon surfaces to be cleaned if used indiscriminately, and in particular on varnished surfaces which are decomposed and blinded or dimmed by acids, and in view of the resinifying effect of acids upon hydrocarbon oils which causes the latter to become gummy, care has been taken in the compounding of my preparation to reduce the amount of acid present to the minimum, and I also avoid an excess of hydrocarbon oil. Only enough acetic acid is used to insure ready and complete decomposition, during the burnishing or olishing operation, of the antimony trichlorid, thus reventing injury to the surface being cleane while also avoiding tarnishing of this surface due to formation of a film of antimony trichlorid thereon and subsequent oxidation of this film, such as occurs where an excess of antimony trichlorid is employed. By using acetic acid, it is possible to regulate accurately the acidity of the preparation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The herein described composition of matter which consists of paraffin oil, denatured alcohol in excess of said paraflin oil, a slight amount of trichlorid of antimony, an excess of very dilute acetic acid, containing acetic acid somewhat in excess of the amount of trichlorid of antimony present, and water.
2. The herein described polishing, cleaning and burnishing compound which consists of distilled water fourteen ounces, acetic acid of thirty-six er cent. strength half an ounce, denatured at cohol five ounces, paraffin oil four ounces, trichlorid of antimony one dram, oil of mirbane and a coloring agent.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES WALLACE.
