Beit known that I, SAMUEL J'. WEBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minden, in the parish of Webster, State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and usefull Improvements in Bale-Compresses, of which the following is -a specification, reference being hadtherein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to bale-compresses, and the objects and advantages thereof will be hereinafter described, and the novel features will be particularly pointed out in the claims.

Y v 1 represents the cross-head of the compress, which is of the usual construction and is supported in position by the four opposite risers 2, the lower ends of which pass through the base, the structure being bound together by suitable nuts applied to the ends of the Bolted to the base 3 is a steam-cylinder, 4, the bottom of the same being formed by said base. Fig. 3 is aV is reduced at its lower end and provided with the piston-head 11, designed to iit the larger cylinder, 11, and with the smaller head, 12, at its center, which lits and operates in the smaller cylinder, 7. The reduced lower end of the rod 10 extends below the under surface of the piston-head 11 and terminates in a valve adapted to open and close a steamexhaust, 13, formed in the base 3, to which a suitable exhaust-pipe is attached. The details of this valve are shown in Fig. 3, the valve being removed in Fig. 1 to show the exhaust-opening. An opening,13x, is formed in the lower end of the cylinder 4, through ,y
which steam is supplied. The reduced stem portion 13 of the piston-rod 10 performs another function other than the regulation of the exhaust, in that it 'prevents the pistonhead 11 from coming in contact with the base 3, whereby a steam-space is formed between f the head and base, thus forming a cushion of steam.
Mounted for movement between the vertical risers 2 and above the cylinders i and 7 is the hydraulic plate 14, which plate is supported in position and actuated in its movement by a system of toggle-levers pivoted to the plate and to the smaller head, 12. This system is duplicated at each side of the hydraulic` plate, and consists of the opposite members or sections, 15 and 16, the upper members, 15, beingpivoted to therplate by means of pins 19, passing through the ends of the plate and the sections and forming a kneejoint, as at 18, with the lower members or sections, the ends of which are pivotally connected, as at 19X, to the piston-rod 10. From the pin 18 of eachpair or systemcf levers there extends a central section or lever, 20, the outer end of which is pivoted to the bearing-pinv21, journaled in the opposite risers 2 at each side of the frame-work. The framework is strengthened and prevented from spreading at this point by suitable tie-rods, 22, which are passed through the riser, embracing yolie 23 at each side ofthe said framework.
The `hydraulic plate is centrally and vertically bored, as at 25, and provided with a cylinder, 26, the upper end of which extends bethe upper' head, 27, of the piston-rod 10, which serves as a hydraulic plunger. An annular recess, 24, is also formed in the plate 14 and surrounds the cylinder 26.
Above the plate is mounted the movable platen or follower 28, at each of the four corners of which are formed riserembracing lugs 29. At the center of the platen there is formed a depending head, 3l, which, when the to platen is in its lowermost position, depends slightly into the top of the cylinder 2G. An annular flange, 30, also depends from said plate, fitting into the recess or chamber 24, formed in lthe plate 14, the outer surface of said flange forming a water-tight and sliding joint with the Wall of said chamber and form ing a Water-space between the inner walls of said flange and the cylinder 26.
The operation of my invention is as follows: 2o The steam-supply valve being opened, the steam is admitted through the opening 13X, under the piston-head 11, which ascends and carries with it the smaller head, 12, which, through the medium of the toggle-levers de- 2 5 scribed, raises the hydraulic plate and platen and carries the bale up against the head of the press. As the head 12 ascends, it comes in contact with the flange 8, formed on the cylinder 7, and raises said cylinder until 3o the head 27 of piston 10 comes in contact with the projection 31 of the platen. At the time that the smaller cylinder, 7, is being lifted the hydraulic plunger 27 is moving for- Ward and forcing the water contained in the 3 5 cylinder 26 out into the chamber 24, whereby the bale is hydraulically compressed. The exhaust-valve is now opened and the parts resume their normal position.
By this construction it will be seen that the lo compress is greatly simplified, and that al1 strain occurs between the cross-head 1 and the point where the levers are pivoted to the iisers, and that the strain is in a direct vertical line, and that the employment of a base is obviated.
Having described my invention and its operation, what I claim is- 1. In a bale-compress, the combination, with the cross-head, base, and risers thereof, 5o of a steam-cylinder mounted on the base and havinga second cylinder sliding within the same and a piston-rod provided with heads adapted to operate in each of the cylinders, and means for connecting the piston-rod with thi pressing devices, substantially as specifie 2. In a bale-compress, the combination, with the frame-work thereof, of a steam-cylinder provided with a smaller sliding cylin- 6o der, a piston-rod mounted in the steam-cylinder and carrying a piston-head for reciprocation therein and a second piston-head for reciprocation in the smaller cylinder, and means for connecting the piston-rod with the pressing devices, and flanges on the smaller cylinder for limiting its movement in the larger cylinder, substantially as specified.
4. In a bale-compress, a steam-cylinder carrying a smaller sliding cylinder and a piston-rod provided with heads for operating in said cylinders, in combination with a hydraulic plate mounted above the cylinders and a system of toggle-levers connecting the upper piston-head and the plate, substantially as specified.
5. In a bale-compress, a steam-cylinder carrying a smaller sliding cylinder and a pistonrod having piston-heads for operating in the cylinders, in combination with a hydraulic plate mounted above the cylinders, a system of toggle-levers connecting the piston-rod and plate, and a follower or platen mounted above said plate, substantially as specified.
6. In a bale-compress, a steam-cylinder having a smaller sliding cylinder, a piston-rod carrying heads adapted to operate in the cylinders, and a hydraulic plate mounted above the same, in combination with a system of toggle-levers connecting the piston-rod and plate and a hydraulic plunger on said rod and operating in the plate, substantially as specified.
7. In a bale-compress, the combination of a steam-actuated movable hydraulic plate having a central bore provided with a cylinder and a headed piston-rod for operating in said cylinder, and having an annular hydraulic chamber surrounding the cylinder, in combination with a superimposed platen having an annular depending flange adapted to take into the annular hydraulic chamber of the plate, substantially as specified.
8. The cylinder 4, having the ring. 6, in combination with the sliding cylinder 7, having the anges 8 and 9, the base 3, having the exhaust-opening 13, the piston-rod 10, terminating in a valve, and the head 11, substantially as specified.
9. The cylinder 4, the rod 10, having heads 11, 12, and 27 and sliding cylinder 7, in combination with the hydraulic plate 14 and the toggle-levers consisting of the sections 15 and 16, the section 15 pivoted to the plate, as at 19, to the section 16, as at 18, and the section 16 to the piston-rod, as at 19", and the levers 20, pivoted to the sections 15 and 16 and to pins 2l, journaled in the risers 2 of the framework, substantially as specified.
10. The combination, with the piston-rod 10, having heads 11, 12, and 27, and cylinders in which said heads slide, of the hydraulic. plate 14, having the hydraulic bore 25 and cylinder 26 mounted therein,substantial1y as specified.
