Description

R. A. ADAMS. EXTENSION GRAINING MACHINE.
No. 40,224. PatentedOct. 13, 1863.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT A. ADAMS, OF CHlCAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOQLS FOR GRAINING IN IMITATION OF WOOD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 40,224, dated October 1 3, 1863 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT A. ADAMS, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful extension-machine for the purpose of graining in imitation of various woods, marbles, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clearfand exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification. in which- Figure 1 represents the end, Fig. 2 the s de, Fig. 3 the hack, and Fig. 4 the face, of fihi machine.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a frame of any .required size, made of brass, iron, or other material, and in two sections, one section sliding into the other, so that the machine may be made longer or shorter by extension or contraction to tit the space to be grained, and adapting to the front or face thereof an elastic plate, with 1 ke capacity of extension or contraction, on which is carved or cast the figure of the various woods, marbles, or ornaments intended to be transferred or grained.
To enable Others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Zach side and the center of the frame of said machine is composed oftwo parallel bars or plates of the metal used, (see letter A in Figs. 2 and 3,) one bar or plate belonging to each section, they being held so as to slide closely together by tongue and groove or by clevys, (see letter B in Figs. 2 and 3,) or by both, so that in the extension and contraction of the machine they slide in opposite directions; and the two sections are held in the position required for use by ratchet or other suitable fastening on the sides or center of the frame. (See letter (J in Figs. 2 and 3.) On the back of the frame, at both ends and on each side thereof, are hooks upon which to fasten the rubber and plate hereinafter mentioned, (see letter 1) in Fig; 2,) and also an eye in which to secure the handles of the machine. (See letter E in Fig. 2.) {This frame is to be made straight, crescent, orany other suitable shape, On the front side or face of each section of said frame thin plates of tin,
zinc, copper, brass, or iron, are soldered, riveted, or cast, the metal plate of one section sliding closely under the other. (See letter F in Fig. 3.) Then take a piece of pure vulcanized rubber, G, of the. length required by the frame, and alittle wider than the frame, so that when eitended it will retain width sutiicien'tto cover the frame, and fasten each end securely into a link, K, made of wire. This is laid upon the front side or face of the frame and made fast thereto by catching the wire, link over the book 1.). (See letter G in Fig. 2.) Upon the vulcanized rubber Grv securely fasten an elasticptate, H, composed of the materials hereinafter mentioned, upon the, face of which shall be carved or cast the figure of the wood, marble, or ornament which is intended to be transferred or grained. (See letter ll in Fig. 2 and also Fig. 4.) tie plate and rubber are permanently attached to each other, and form one part of the machine, and are so constructed and composed as to be extended or contracted without injury to the figure or material with the extension or contraction of the frame. The elastic plate is composed of the materials and in about the proportions following-to wit, two pounds glue, one pound honey. four ounces glycerine, and one-half pint india-rubber disject to be grained.
What lclaim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v The extension and adjustable frame A A, in combination with the elastic plate G H, in the manner and for the purposes herein described.
ROBERT A. ADAMS.
