Description

'(No Model.)
1-. J. BERGENDAHL.
' PIPE WRENCH.
No. 401,926. I Patented'Apr. 23. 1889.
flttorney UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
- LEWVIS J BERGENDAHL, OF PENDLETON, OREGON.
PIPE-WRENCH.
v SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,926, dated April 23, 1889.
Application filed December 27, 1888. fierial No'. 294,811. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
. Be it known that I, LEwIs J. BERGENDAHL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pendleton, in the county of Umatilla and State of Oregon, have invented certain' new and useful Improvements in Pipe- Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in pipe-wrenches; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement or combination of the parts thereof, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide a pipe-wrench which will not slip from the pipe or around the same after being attached thereto, the parts thereof being of simple and effective construction, strong and durable, and inexpensive in manufacture. I attain this object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on the line 00 a: of Fig. 2.
A indicates therein or handle of the wrench, whose front end is providedwith an enlarged integral formation comprising front V-shaped serrated grips, a a, in rear of which ,on two sides of the handle, lugs a are arranged and provided with an intersecting space, a The said grips a are also separated by an intersecting space, a for a purpose hereinafter explained.
By means of a rivet, a, the end link of a chain, B, is secured in the opening or space a between one pair of the lugs a, the space between the other pair of lugs and the space I between the grips a being open and free of obstruction for the passage of the chain B therethrough.
Directly in rear of one pair of lugs 01, a rod, 0, is centrally and vertically mounted in the handle A,-having a hooked end, 0, and shoulders 0 formed therewith, which bear against the two opposite sides of the handle to prevent said rod from becoming displaced from the handle and to allow it to be revolved.
In operation the chain B is thrown around the pipe to be turned or wrenched and passed through the lugs 11 in front of the hooked rod 0. The serrated V-shaped grips are caused to closely impinge against the pipe, and a link of the chain B is thrown over the hooked end 0 of the rod 0. The wrench as thus arranged will be ready for work, and may be turned in either one of two directions, or, if desired, may be reversed and the hooked end 0 of rod 0 be onthe top or bottom. The V- shaped construction of the grips a readily permit and are especially adapted for this reverse op erafiiveness. n
The special function of the revoluble hooked rod 0 lies in its adaptation to engage the links of the chain B at any angle, thereby avoiding the necessity of a precise adjustment of said links in order to throw the same over the hooked rod.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Lettei s Patent, is
In a pipe-wrench, a rein or handle having an enlarged integral formation at one end, comprising V-shaped grips with an intersecting space, and pairs of lugs with openings between them arranged in rear of said grips, a chain connected to and mounted between one pair of said lugs, and a revoluble hooked rod mounted in said handle in rear of the other pair of lugs and adapted to be engaged by the links of the said chain, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I alfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS J. BERGENDAHL.
