Description
(ModeL) G. PADDOGK.
FISHING REEL. N0. 401,849. Patented Apr. 23, 1889.
q/V vtmaowo Snug/M1006 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE PADDOOK, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
FISHING-REEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,849, dated April 23, 1889.
Application filed February 11, 1889. Serial No. 299,473. (ModeL) .To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE PADDOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Broole 1yn,county of Kings, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Fishing-Reel, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in reels for angling purposes.
My device is of a peculiarly simple construction, and is composed of a single piece of spring metal or other suitable material formed into the construction to be hereinafter described and claimed.
My device can be loosely secured to the rod in any convenient manner, such as a screw or an eye; but I do not limit myself to such construction.
To enable others to understand my device, attention is directed to the following drawings, in which like letters of reference refer to corresponding parts, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, showing my devicein position; Fig. 2,amodification, also in elevation.
In the drawings, letter A designates the horizontal piece, placed parallel, or nearly so, to the rod. Ateach end of the piece A are two inverse semicircular arms, B B. The arms are adapted to the operation of having the line wound thereon. The part B is extended to form a handle, O. This handle, as can be seen, is for the purpose of winding the cord in hollow spaces of the semicircular pieces B B. The part A is secured to the rod by ening device.
the reel from coming in contact with the rod l at the point where the fastening device enters the wood. It also acts as a guide for the reel and keeps it on a horizontal plane, thus avoiding the wabbling to and fro, as would otherwise be the result.
The device I have just described is the preferable one 5 but I will now describe a modification thereof-that is, a slight addition to the above, and by which means it is made much stronger and durable. It is illustrated in Fig. 2, and is as follows: Bent back. on the semicircular portion B is a horizontal bar, G, parallel with the one at A. This produces more uniformity of action with but a slight advance in price over the one described above, but is not as preferable, for the above reasons.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A reel of the character described, constructed of a central strip perforated for the reception of a securing-screw and having at each end a curved arm, one of said arms being projected to form an operating-handle, substantially as set forth.
2. A reel of the character described, consisting of a strip adapted to be secured to the rod and provided at each end with a curved arm, one of said arms extended to and secured at the other arm, substantially as and for the purpose described.
GEO. PADDOCK.
