UNITED STATES PATENT GEORGE .W. PASSEL, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
PRESSURE-BAR FOR PLANlNG-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,299, dated April 9, 1889. Application filed November 26, 1887. Serial No. 256,282. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PASSEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pressure-Bars for Planing- Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improvement in pressure-bars for planer-s; and I have herein described one form of the same, and illustrated it in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is an isometric view of a pressurebar. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front view, and Fig. 4 is a front view of a modified construct-ion.
The pressure-bar A is provided on its front side with a shoulder, a, below which is attached an elastic plate, 13, which is made to conform to the shape of the lower part of the pressure-bar. This elastic plate may be composed of as many pieces as desired, and is rigidly but adjustably secured to the pressurebar by bolts or screws, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4.
The construction of parts is such that a short distance from the point of attachment the elastic plate or plates 13 are held away from the pressure-barA and extend a little to the rear of the lower point of such bar. The
plate or plates B conforming to the shape of the bar A adjacent thereto, as before stated, when said plates are pressed up against the bar A they will fit closely against the same. The lower edge of the bar Ais unbroken and the bar is provided with a channel or series of channels, 0, along the same, which are open at tact, and they communicate with the space between the bar and said plate.
The said pressure-bar is held in position in any desired manner. I prefer to so mount it that it shall have a movement in a curved line nearly concentric with the cylinder. The elastic plate gives a yielding bearing-surface to the pressure-bar, readily accommodating itself to the inequalities of the material with which it comes in contact.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A pressure-bar for planing-m achines, pro vided with an inclosed channel or channels open at one end to receive and at the other end to discharge chips, shavings, and like substances, substantially as described.
2. A press Lire-bar for planin g-machines, having an unbroken lower edge and a channel or channels for receiving and discharging chips, shavings, and like substances, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a pressure-bar for planing-machines, of an elastic plate attached thereto, and an open channel or channels communicating with the space between such plate and the pressure-bar for the escape of chips, shavings, and like materials, substantially as described. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. PASSEL. WVitnesses:
A. N. SPENCER, W. H. MCMILLAN.
