PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK L. FORSTER, OF SHELBYVILLE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO JACOB A. CONREY AND MARY CONREY, OF SHELBYVILLE,
INDIANA.
CUTTER-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,336, dated May 5, 1903.
Application filed August 22,1902. Serial No. 120.7l4. (llo model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that, FRANK L. FORSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelbyville, in the county of Shelby and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jointer-Guards,ofwhich the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object to provide a knife or cutter guard for jointers and similar woodworking-machines of such type as are provided with tables which are open at the top and provided with cutters which project above the table; and the invention consists in the construction and combination of the knife or cutter guard with a table and the connecting means between the knife-guard and table, as will be hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a sectional view, the section being taken to one side of the longitudinal center of the table.
Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is a sectional,
view, of a modification of the guard.
A refers to a jointer or planing-machine, the top thereof being in two parts a b, between which is mounted a cutter c. The adjacent ends of the sections of the table A are connected in any suitable manner, and the cutter may be changed to suit the character of the work. The center portion of the parts ab of the table A provides a flat surface, above which the blades of the cutter project to cut the face or sides of the lumber in the usual manner. To the table, so as to lie in the depressions adjacent to the sides, are secured spring-bars d 61, they being held in place by bolts, and such bars as are shown may be adjusted by moving the set-screws e, which pass through the section a of the table and impinge against the under side of the springbars. The spring-bars d cl are so constructed as to provide an arched or upward-curved portion above the arbors or journals of the cutters, and beyond the arch there is a return-bend d, which positions the other terminal of the spring over the arch.
Aguard Bis attached to the upper ends of the spring-bars (Z d and is supported thereby in an inclined position with respect to the top of the table, the end of the guard above the section I) of the table being maintained at a higher elevation than theotherend,so that the lumber will be pressed by the lower edge of the guard against the top of the table. The guard is attached to the upper portion of the springs d by bolts 11 When the construction shown in Fig. 1 is used, the guard B spans the opening or space between the sections of the table and covers the cutter to provide an efiective guard therefor. The guard being springsupported will adjust itself to the thickness of the lumber to be operated upon. The arched portion of the spring-bars span the arbors of the cutters, so that the arbors will not be engaged by the springs and will not prevent access to the bearings when it is desired to oil the same or change the cutters.
The guard B instead of being supported in an inclined position, as shown in Fig. 1, may bemaintained horizontal or parallel with the top of the table, and when so maintained the guard is provided on its under side, near its rear edge, with a beveled 0r inclined strip f,which extends across the guard, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. When such construction is used, the upper members of the springbars are parallel with the top of the table. In both the forms shown in Figs. 1 and 3 the rear edge of the guard is normally at a lower elevation than the front edge to bear upon the upper face of the material and hold the same upon the table.
The combined guard and presser-board B in line with the end recesses through which pass'the bolts 61 may be provided with slots 6 b, as well as with perforations o for the purpose of placing the board B so that it will extend only partially over the cutter, and when so supported there may be attached bearing blocks for a horizontallymovable presser bar. The combined guard and presser-board can be readily detached from the work-table either by loosening the bolts d or by removing the bolts which pass through the ends of the springs.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to-secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a work-table having a transverse opening, a rotary cutter operating in said opening, of springs attached to the table said springs having arched portions above the opening through the table, returnbends and end portions above the arched parts of the springs, and a guard attached to the end portions of the springs and maintained thereby at an angle With respect to the table, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a work-table having below the plane of the top thereof the major portion of a rotary cutter, of a combined guard for the cutter and a presser-board for the work connected to the table to overlie the cutter, the combined guard and presser-board being maintained normally at an angle with the table-top, and means for adjusting the supports for the combined guard and presserboard, substantially as shown.
3. In combination with a work-table having a transverse opening, a rotary cutter positioned in said opening, a spring constructed to present an arched portion above the bearing of the cutter and above said arched portion an inclined part, means for adjustably connecting the spring to the table, a combined guard and presser-board attached to the upper and inclined member of the spring to overlie the cutter, substantially as shown.
4:. In combination with a work-table having a rotary cutter the knives thereof projecting slightly above the top of the table, of a com- FRANK L. FoRsTER,
