Description

UNTTED STATES PATENT Tricia JOHN B. TARE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,389, dated June 5, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. TARE, of Chi- Piece for Planing-Machines; and I do here` by declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part orn this specification, in which- Figure lis a top view ofthe improved mouthpiece, showing' it operating at two points upon the edge ot' a board which is heilig planed or iointed. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the month-piece pressing upon one point only of the board.
Similar letters ot reference indicate corresponding parts in the two gures.
This invention relates to an improvement on the planing-machine patented June S, 1858, and numbered 20,527, and to the feature therein shown ot' protecting the face of the stui` duringt the operation of the cutters by pressnre-surfaces.
The object of my invention is to employ, in conjunction with tonguing-and-grooving or jointing cutters or planers, a spring monthpiece of such form as will support the edge ot' the board while being cut on both sides ot' the cutter and prevent the stui from being slivered by said cutter, said mouth-piece being so applied that it will yield and accommodate itself to inequalities in the width of the stuft' without releasing the stuff from pressure, as will be hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings,Arepresents arotary cutter or planer, which may be adapted for jointing or tonguing and grooving the edges of boards. I
B represents a mouth-piece, which is of a C shape, and which partially encircles the rotary cutter A, as shown in the drawings. This mouth-piece is pivoted at a to a slide, b, which is allowed a movement at right angles to the line of the stuft' in the machine, restrained only kby a spring, c, which is of sufficient strength to press the ends of the pieceB against the edge of the stuft' which is being fed past the cutter, as indicated in the drawings.
I have represented no plan for feeding the stuff through the machine, for the reason that my invention relates only to those parts which support the edge ofthe board at and near the point of cutting.
The feed-rollers, guides, and frame-work for supporting the planing mechanism may be constructed and arranged as represented in the Patent No. 20,527 aforesaid, or in any wellknown manner.
It will be seen by reference to the drawings, Fig.1,that the stuft'is sustained bythe mouthpiece B at two points, ef, the stuft being fed past the rotary cutter in the direction indicated bythe arrow. At the point e the end of the piece B is Areduced so that it will press against the edge of the stutt' in such close proximity to the point of cnt that this point c will prevent the stuff from being slivered by the cutters.
On the opposite side of the cutterAthe end of the piece B terminates in a rounded impin ing-surface, which presses against the edge of the stuff after it leaves the cutter and the end e ot' the yielding mouth-piece, as shown in Fig. 2. This end j' of the piece B, together with the end c ot' the same piece, are allowed to yield and accommodate themselves to the width of different boards; also to inequalities in the width of boards.
By having the mouth-piece B pivoted to a spring-slide, b, as above described, the end c of said piece B will accommodate itself to inequalities in the surface or edges ot' boards without the end fleaving its bearing. This movement is indicated in red lines, Fig. 2. By means of this yielding C-shaped mouthpiece B a constant pressure is maintained upon the edge of a board on each side ofthe cutter7 and the cutters are prevented from tearing or slivering the stuft', however irregular the ed ges thereof may be.
I do not conine myself to the precise form of the mouth-piece B, as other forms may be adopted which will operate upon the principle herein set forth; but it is important with my construction to have both the bearing ends ef formed on one piece or stock B B, as shown.
The end f of the mouth-piece will press the stuff closely against the guard and prevent the stuftl from springing after it leaves the end e of said mouth-piece.
Having thus described my invention, what slide b, spring c, in relation to the cutter A,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The construction of the mouth-piece B B e f, substantially in the manner herein de scribed and set forth.
2. The. arrau gement of the mouth-piece B B,
substantially in the manner herein described and shown.
J. B. TARE. Witnesses:
