Description
(No Model.)
B. G. MERSHON. GUTTER'HEAD.
No. 329,756. Patented Nov. 3, 1885.
WITNESSES .dttorneys 1 Pains, MW M UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD G. MERSHON, OF EAST SAGINAW, MICHIGAN.
CUTTER-HEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,756, dated November 3, 1885.
Application filed June 17, 1885.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD O. MERSHON, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cylinders for Planing- Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and tion and novel combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates a planingcylinder, which is made in sections of two or more heads, B, according to the size of the machine in which the planing-cylinder is used. Said heads B are fitted to an arbor, O, of the usual pattern. Spaces D are left between the heads,
instead of constructing them in one solid piece, as heretofore. The heads B are connected together by two or more longitudinal iron or steel bars, 0 C G O, to secure the requisite strength and stiffness, and at the same time forming the same style or form of cut ting-edge as is now provided in the old form of cylinder.
E designates the cutting-knives, which, with Serial No. 168,979. (No model.)
this construction of cylinder, are held by being clamped between OCOO and cap F, and may be made of very light, thin, and narrow strips of steel. Furthermore, by a different construction, the bars 0 O 0 O or the clamping-caps F may be dispensed with and knives of the common description used without destroying the stiffness and strength of cylinder. Further, this construction admits of balancing each head separately, and thereby insuring a perfect balance and a lighter head. which will run steadier at the highest rate of speed and will do more and better work than the cylinder now commonly used. This construction admits of the removal of two of the knives E and the substitution of headingknives in making ceiling, or other shaped knives in working moldings. 7
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A planing-machine cylinder comprising a plurality of heads having central transverse apertures and threaded face recesses, plain longitudinal bars having perforations arranged to coincide with the face-recesses of the said heads, bolts for securing the bars to the heads, blade-clamping caps recessed on their under sides, and bolts for securing the caps to the heads, all combined and arranged for joint'operation, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD O. MERSHON.
