HARYESTER-CUTTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,117, dated April 9, 1889. Application filed September 8,1888. Serial No. 284,855. (No model.)

To all whont it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN A. BLAIR, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Harvester Cutting Apparatus, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to improvements in means for coupling or securing the knives of a harvester cut-ting apparatus in place, so that the same are reliably held in place during the operation or working of the machine, and at the same time may be easily separated when desired. For this purpose it consists in providing each knife with a flange and the locking-bar with a series of faces on its back, the said flanges and faces being parallel with each other and inclined to the edges of the cutter-bar.

Similar letters and numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a series of harvester knives or cutters, and B represents the baron which said knives are removably supported. Rising from said bar are lugs 1, whose sides are downwardly converging for engagement with the backs 2 of the knives, the sides of said backs being upwardly converging, so that dovetailed joints are formed between said parts for the knives and lugs.

O represents a locking-bar or cap which is formed with slots 3, which taper in the direction of their length, and have upwardly-flaring sides so as to engage with the tongues 4 on the lugs 1, and thus interlock therewith.

Rising from the backs of the knives or cutters are flanges or lips 5, againstwhich abuts the back of the locking-bar or cap 0, as in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. \Vhen the locking-bar or cap is removed, the knives may be displaced by sliding them forward, this feature being import-ant for purposes of repairs, sharpening, &c. The knives are restored or applied by sliding motions to the rear, thus interlocking the knives with the lugs, Owing to the dovetailed joints between said parts. The locking-bar or cap is now located and tightened, whereby the cutter-bar and locking-bar or cap are firmly connected as one, and the knives are immovably held in position owing to their dovetailed connections with the lugs, the locking action of the locking-bar or cap, and engagement of the flanges or lips with said locking-bar or cap. By this construction the knives are prevented from being pushed through or backward during service, and re liably retain their places, as is evident.

In order to tighten the cap against the lips 5, the contiguous faces or edges of the said parts are in a series of parallel vertical planes inclined to the edges of the cutter-bar, thus producing a tightening between them when the cap is moved in the proper direction.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A cutter-bar with lugs and tongues thereon, knives with recesses, the walls of which embrace the lugs, and a locking bar or cap with slots to engage the tongues, each knife having a flange at its back, and the lockingbar having a series of faces at its back, said series of flanges and faces being in parallel vertical planes inclined to the edges of the cutter-bar, said parts being combined substantially as described.

2. A cutter-bar in combination with knives, and a locking-bar for said knives, each knife having a vertical flange, and the said lockingbar having on its back a series of faces, said flanges and faces being parallel with each other and inclined to the edges of the cutterbar, substantially as described.
