' UNITEDI STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CALEB HANK, OF JACKSON, OHIO.
CUTTER-BAR.
SFECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,159, dated April` 30, 1889:
i Application filed November 10,1887. Serial No. 254,778. (No model.) v v To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CALEB HANK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county `of Jackson and State of Ohio, have invented certain`new and useful Improvements in Cutting Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the followin gto be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it vappertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in cutting apparatus.
Hitherto cutterbars have been provided With a removable section extending over the knives to secure them in place; but the construction has been such `as to require a special cutter or a special construction of the bar itself, the present state of the art in the line of my invention disclosing a cutter-bar provided With studs projecting upwardlyfrom a rabbeted portion of the cutter-bar adapted to extend through holes formed in the middle portions of the cutters-one in each-the cutters to abut against a shoulder on the cutterbar, t-he tops of the studs being iiush with the upper faces of the cutters, and a removable bar to be secured over the rear upper faces of the cutters to lock them in position; or the cutter-bar has been provided with dowel-studs set in its upper face--two for each cutter--and cutters provided with sockets in their lower faces to receive and correspond to the shape of the upper ends of the doWelstuds have been provided, the cutters being locked in position by a removable bar.
The object of my present invention is to provide a-cutter-bar of such construction that the cutters-one or more of themmay be removed and replaced at pleasure Without disturbing the cutter-bar itself and Without cutting rivet-heads, and to further provide a cutter-bar which may be readily attached to the mowers and reapers now in use and adapted to the cutters commonly in use, and still further to provide a locking-bar in connection `with my improved cutter-bar which may be employed in connection with the cutterbar and cutters of machines now in common use.
Vi'th these ends in vien7 my invention consists in certain features of construction and ,combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is l with the bar, when a new bar is supplied, or
maybe iirmly set in the holes of the old bar When that is utilized. The studs a-two for each cutter-correspond to the two holes in the cutters in common use and project up- Wardly above the upper face of the bar A a distance equal to the combined thickness of the cutter and the lock-bar.
B represents one of the cutters, of usual construction, provided With its two holes b to receive the fasteningstuds. In the present instance the cutter is intended to slip over two adjacent studs with a snug fit, but capable of being readily removed therefrom.
C represents the locking-bar. It consists of a plain fiat bar of metal beveled on its front upper corner and provided With a series of holes, c, corresponding to the studs a in the cutter-bar, and is adapted to be slid downwardly over the tops of the studs into contact With the upper faces of the cutters When the latter are adjusted in position for use. The bar C is further provided With three holes, D, (more or less,) to receive fastening-screws d, to secure the bar C to the cutter-bar, and thereby lock the cutters in position. Since the bar C is capable of being pressed into contact with the upper faces of the cutters, vthere is no opportunity for the cutters to Work up and down or tilt on their studs-an objection to the construction referred to above, Where studs project through the cutters and rest in contact Wit-h the un der face of the bar; and, furthermore, as the studs are supported at both ends, they are prevented from bending and are less likely to become broken by an unusual strain on the cutter. l
IOO
The eye E, through which the cutter-bar is coupled to the connecting-rod, may be formed integral with the locking-bar or may be formed independently, as shown, and secured to the cutter-bar.
This cutting apparatus may be attached or applied to all reapers andmowers now in use by simply raising the buttons or keepers (three or more) on the guard-bar the height of the thickness of the upper or lock bar, which will be about o11efourth of an inch. Said lock-bar may be as Wide as the cutterbar, if desirable. The buttons or keepers, when made for the above improvement, may be made With a step in the button or keepers to suit the thickness of the upper or lock bar.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the cutter-bar provided with studs extending at right angles thereto a distance greater than the thickness of the cutters, two studsA for each cutter, of the cutters provided with two holes, each adapted to be slid over the studs, and the herein-described locking-bar provided with a series of holes corresponding to the holes in the cutters and to the studs projecting through the cutters, and fastening-screws for securing the locking-bar to the cutter-bar in engagement lwith the cutters, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CALEB HANK.
