CUTTER-BAR FOR HARVESTERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0.`280,250, dated June 26, 1883. Application filed April 14, 1883. (No model.)

To all w/tom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL SHIRLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Market, in the county of Shenandoah and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful CutteIBar for Harvesters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to harvester cutterbars of that class in which the teeth or knives are alternately secured to two strips,which are then secured together to form the cutter-bar, and its object is to provide a device possessing superior advantages in point of simplicity, in* expensiveness, and general efficiency.

Heretofore in this class of cutter-bars the two parts of the bar have not been directly clamped together, but have been placed sidey by side, or one in'rear of the other, so that the shanks of the knives of the rear bar or portion have to be made longer than those of the front part, and these two portions have been clamped together by connecting-pieces; but in my invention the two parts carrying the alternately-arranged teeth are placed one on top the other, and are secured together by pins or bolts passing directly through both pieces and through the knife', as shown, wherebya much stronger and more durable arrangement of both the teeth and the bar is secured, and which will admit of the ready removal of the top bar, by thel simple operation of the securing pins or bolts, to enable the knives to be sharpened, or removed for substitution, or any other purpose.

In the drawings, `Figure l is a, perspective view of my improved cutter-bar. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig.

3 is a transverse sectional view taken throughA one of the securing-bolts. Fig. 4 is a detail view, in perspective, of the tongue-and-groove end connection of the two parts of the bar.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the main portion of the bar, in which is formed the eye B, and to the top surface of which is secured a series of knives or cutters, C, between each one of which series is left a space corresponding to the width of one of the said knives. At the end of the bar A, having the eye B, itis provided with a shoulder, D, in

which is provided a groove, E, extending across its face, and the other end of the bar A is formed with a head or enlargement, F, forming a shoulder, G, in which is formed another transverse groove, H. These grooves E and H are preferably dovetailed, as shown at I, and are beveled, as at J, toward the front face of the bar A.

K designates the top half of the `cutter-bar, which strip is provided with a series of cutters or knives, L, which are arranged to be re ceived in the space on the bar A, between the cutters C, when the two strips A and K are secured together. The ends M M of the bar K correspond to the form of the grooves E and H, and are received into the latter when the said strip K is placed in position on top the bar A.

N designates the securing pins or bolts, which are passed through perfor-ations in the top strip, K, in the intermediate cutter, and in the under bar, A, and thus by one bolt theseparts are firmly secured together.

The operation and advantages of my invention are obvious. By simply removing the securing-bolts N the parts can be readily separated, and can be as easily replaced when desired.

I claim as Iny invention- The combination of the under bar or strip having the shoulder provided at its inner end,

and having a head or enlargement at its outer end, forming another shoulder, transverse dovetailed grooves being formed in both these shoulders, the top bar or strip, having ends corresponding to the said grooves, and received therein when the said top bar is secured in position directly on top the under bar, the cutters secured to the inner adjoining faces of the two strips and alternately disposed, and the securing bolts or pins passing through the top bar, the intermediate cutter, and the bottom bar, as set forth.
