A. N. BENDER.
SASH PASIENER. No. 400,289. Patented Mar. 26, 1889.
NITED TATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT N. BENDER, OF MANHATTAN, KANSAS.
SASH -FASTENERv SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,289, dated March 26, 1889.
Application filed November 15, 1888. Serial No. 290,924. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT N. BENDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manhattan, in the county of Riley and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements in Sash-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of referenceinarked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in. sash-fasteners operated by a key; and the objects are to provide a simple and desirable means of operating the same, which, while admitting of the ready locking and unlocking of the sash, will at the same time avoid interference of the operating device with the other sash or a screen-frame in raising or lowering any one of same. I attain these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my device inserted in the sash-stile S; Fig. 2, an end elevation of same inserted in said sash-stile; Fig. 3, a plan of the engaging-rack; Fig. 4:, a vertical longitudinal section of the case sho ing the bolt; Fig. 5, a vertical transverse section of the case through the key K; Fig. 6, a plan of the key-stem.
For convenience in describing my device and making same comprehensible, I have included herein a description of a complete sash-fastener with my device attached.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
S refers to the sash-stile; C, the ctse; B, the bolt, with lug Z and space i, in whichplays the ward w of the key K. Case C is provided with plate f, having screw-holes e e and keyopenings 0 0. The key K has shoulder '11, against which rests the escutcheon E, having screw-holes a a, through which the same is secured to the sash-stile. Said escutcheon is indented or hollowed to receive the nut n, the whole being set flush with the surface of the stile to avoid interfering with the other sash or a screen-frame when any one of them is being raised or lowered. Slots 3 5, one on each side of the center of said nut, are provided,in which to insert the lugs 51: no to the key-stem A to operate the device, said nut n being screwed to the body T of said key K.
The engaging-rack D is a thin plate of metal or other suitable material having holes Z Z, and screwed to the window-jamb in such a manner that in operating my device the lug Z is projected into any one of said holes Z Z necessary to secure-the window at the desired height.
It will readily be seen that to operate my device one should insert the key-stein A in the key K and turn same, when the bolt will be projected or recovered by contact of the ward w with the sides of the space 1', as in the ordinary door-lock.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a sash-fastener operated by a key, the escutcheon indented or hollowed to receive a nut screwed onto the body of the key and provided with slots, into which to insert lugs on the end of the detachable key-stem, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in Witnesses:
I. G. HACKER, O. N. KNAPP.
