F. E. FARWELL.
UNiTnD STATES FREDERIC E. F/HXRVELL, OF FITCHBURG, MASSACHUSETTS.
VISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,069, dated March 26, 1889.
Application iiled October 4, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FREDERIC E. FARWELL, of Fitchburg, in the county of Vorcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Vises, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a bottom plan view of my improved vise, a portion of the movable jaw and block being shown as broken away; Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section taken on line x :n in Fig. l; Fig. 3, a horizontal section taken on line y y in Fig. 2, the jaws being represented as broken off; Fig. 4, a side elevation of the sliding block removed; Fig. 5, a horizontal section taken on line e in Fig. 4.-, and Fig. (5 a perspective view of one of the wedge-blocks removed.
Like letters and ligures of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates to that class of vises known as bench-vises, and it consists in certain novel features, as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simpler and more effective device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation.
In the drawings, A represents the fixed jaw, B the movable jaw, and C the hand-wheel. The fixed jaw comprises a vertically-arranged jaw proper, D, and an attaching-plate, A', adapted to be secured to the bench by screws inserted in screw-holes b. The under side of the fixed jaw A is provided with a longitudinally-arranged groove, d, forming a track or way in which the movable jaw B slides. The movable jaw comprises a jaw proper, lil, which registers with the j aw proper, D, when in use, and a box-shaped body or frame, B', provided with lon gitudinally-arran ged flanges 5o f on its upper edge adapted to enter the Serial No. 287,185. (No model.)
The sides of the body of i nal slots or openings o', and the sides of the nut h with horizontally-arranged grooves 7o, (see Figs. 4 and 5,) adapted to register with said slots, the bottom of said grooves being inclined, as shown at l in Fig. 5. Disposed in each groove 7o is a wedge-shaped block, m, having one face, p, (see Fig. 6,) inclined to correspond with the inclined bottom of said groove, the opposite face of said block being provided with serrations fr and alongitudinal groove, in which is secured an oval-shaped spring, o. (See Figs. l and 3.) The wedgeblock m is of such width thatwhen in position in the groove 7o it projects into the slotz' in the body of said jaw and its spring U engages the flange 15 of the track d on the iixed jaw.
In the use of my improvement, the fixed jaw being secured to the bench and the movable jaw disposed in the track d of said iixed jaw, when it is desired to clamp an article between the jaws proper, H D, the movable jaw is pushed inward on said track until said jaws proper engage the article. The handwhcel G is then turned from left to right, causing the nut h to advance on the rod K and force the serrated facera of the wedgeblocks m into engagement with the flange l5 of the llxed jaw, thereby securely clamping the movable jaw against the article in the vise. Then the hand-wheel is turned back, the nut 7L retreats on the rod K and the wedge-blocks are disengaged from the iixed jaw, the springs r forcing said blocks back. into the grooves 7o and preventing them from accidentally binding against the flange l5, thus enabling the movable jaw to be easily withdrawn in the track CZ.
The edges of the flange l5 maybe serrated or Toughened, if desired, to prevent the IOC1 wedge-blocks froml slipping when the article in the rise is subject to sudden blows; but I do not confine myself to so doing.
ll'avng illus explained my invention, what l claim The combination of a 'Fixed jaw having an aiiacliingsplate provided with Ways, a movable jaw provided with a l ox-sliaped flanged i'ranle adapted to slide in said Ways and having slots in its sides, a rod journaled in t-he ends oi' said i' rain e an d provided with a screwihreai'l near iis inner end, a nut adapted to travel on said rod and provided with inclined ways for forcing said blocks inward, snbsianzo tially as described.
