Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC.
RHODOLPHUS KINSLEY, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINED LOCK AND LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 4,000, dated April 16, 1845.
To all whom may concern Be it known that I, RHoDoLrHUs KINS- LEY, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door Locks and Latches; and I de hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l, is a side view with the face plate removed. Fig. 2 is an isometrical view.
The nature of my invention consists in combining the two bolts of a lock so as to take up the least space by making them slide one within the other.
The construction of my lock is as follows: The shell is similar to the common mortise lock, but does not require to be so large, as the parts are arranged more compactlyt-he catch bolt (a) is shaped atI the end that projects beyond the face plate in the ordinary way, after it extends in a short distance, it is forked, and the two projections (a) extend back to the tumbler (b) where their ends turn inward so as to catch on it, this bolt is thrown forward by a spiral spring (c) attached to one of the projections (a) and to the shell. The other bolt (el) is grooved out on one side, so as to receive the catch bolt in it at the forward end, said catch bolt having free play to slide in the groove; as the bolt (ci) extends beyond the point that always remains in the shell, it is made thinner and extends back nearly to the tumbler (ZJ) said bolt may be furnished with tumbler guards (e) of any form, and it is moved back and forth by the key. This bolt may serve to prevent the catch bolt (a) from being drawn back when the door is locked, and thus strengthen the bolt (al) (which bolt in the drawing is colored blue) the bolt (a) being embraced by it a distance equal to its motion, or the latch bolt may be leftfree to play when the door is locked if desired by the manufacturer.
Having thus fully described my improvement, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The so combining the'catch bolt (a) and bolt of the lock as that one will slide within a groove in the other in the manner and for the pur Jose vherein set forth.
RH DOLPHUS KINSLEY.
