To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANNIE G. DYRENFORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverside, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portfolios, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in portable receptacles or portfolios; and my objcct is to provide such a receptacle for articles of a flexible and more or less flat nature which it is undesirable to fold or roll into compact bundles, but which at the same time it is desirable to reduce in compass for convenience in carrying.

To this end my invention consists in the general construction of my improved device; and it further consists indetails of construction and combinations of parts, all as hereinafter set forth and claimed.

There are numerous connections in which a portable receptacle constructed on the general plan of my improvement may be employed to advantagefor example, as a case for sheet. music, to protect the latter and render it conveniently portable without creasing it by folding or rolling it in a manner to interfere with its being flat when taken from the case, or as a package for plush or other delicate fabrics, or starchcd shirts and the like, which should not be tightly rolled or folded, and which for this reason it has been necessary hitherto to pack in comparatively large bundles, unwieldy in carrying.

In the drawings, Figure 1 illustrates in perspective my improved receptacle provided with flaps and designed more especially for use as a dry-goods package. The receptacle is shown in its normal opened or flat condition with the flaps also opened, and an article to be carried partly in the device to illustrate the manner of its insertion. Fig. 2 is a similar View of my improved receptacle without flaps, designed more especially for carrying sheet-music, and shown in its closed condition or in the condition to which it is reduced for carrying.

A is the receptacle, which comprises, as essential features, first, a back orbody portion, A, of a flexible material, which will permit the lateral edges :11 of the receptacle to be caused to approach each other without necessarily bending in a manner to produce a sharp angle in the body portion; second, two pockets, g, on the inner surface of the part A toward the edges 00 and opening toward each other; and, third, securing means, as the loops 1) o, to hold the edges 00 together when the device is closed. A fourth feature, which, though eminently desirable, is not necessarily indispensable, is a handle, as the loop 0, by means of which the device, when closed, may be rendered more convenient for carriage in the hand.

The music-case, Fig. 2, is constructed with a view to durability, and should be of leather or other similarly strong material, and it may be more or less ornamental. The receptacle shown in Fig. 1, however, is intended to be but for a single use and then discarded, and may be of any cheap materialsucl1 as paper, or stronger material, depending upon the degree of strength of the latter required. One or more flaps, 72, may be provided. where it is desirable to afford additional protection to the contents, and this protection may be augmented by gumming the free edges of the flaps and fastening them down when the article to be carried is inserted. One or more flaps, 12, could, if desired, be placed upon the music-case, and, if of ornamental material, would add considerably to the attractiveness of the device.

The fastening means shown for maintain in g the receptacle closed consists of the loop 19, secured to the back A adjacent to one edge :0, beyond which it is designed to extend, and a preferably larger loop, 0, similarly secured toward the opposite edge in, beyond which it also should extend.

In the use of the device the article or art-icles-such as Z-to be carried are placed therein by inserting opposite edges into the pockets q, as shown in Fig. 1, and the receptacle should be large enough to permit the articles to lie flat when thus inserted. The device is closed, as aforesaid, by bringing the edges 00 toward each, when the loop 0 may be passed through the loop 19, the first-named loop thus affording a handle which, while held in the hand, maintains the device in its closed condition. \Vhen the handle is released the device and contents will open out of their own accord.

While I prefer to employ the loops shown, I do not Wish to be limited to the use of any particular closing device, as a clasp, strap and buckle, or other well-known and desirable fastening means to hold the edges as together, could be employed with advantage.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. Aportable receptacle for sheet-music and the like, comprising a flexible back or body portion, A, having pockets q, opening toward each other and sealed atthe lateral edges, and a securing device upon each outer edge of the back or body portion A whereby the article to be carried may be inserted at its opposite edges into both pockets q, and the opposite edges of the back fastened together without creasing the body portion or the article carried therein, substantially as described.

2. A portable receptacle for sheet-music and the like, substantially as described, comprising, in combination, a flexible body portion, A, pockets q on one surface toward opposite edges of the body portion and opening toward each other, whereby the article to be carried may be inserted at its opposite edges into the pockets q, and the receptacle be bent to cause the edges to approach each other without producing a sharp angle in the body por tion or contents of the receptacle, a handle, 0, and means for securing the edges together, substantially as described.
