METAL BLANK FOR VEHICLE TONGUES, &@

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CYRUS M. CARNAHAN, OF CORAOPOLIS, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES C. DIOKEY, TRUSTEE, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
METAL BLANK FOR VEHlCLE-TONGUES, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,969, dated March 19, 1889.
Application filed June 14, 1888.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CYRUs M. CARNAHAN, of Coraopolis, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metal Blanks for Vehicle-Tongues, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a metal blank from which a vehicle-tongue is to be made. Fig. 2 is a View of one end thereof. Fig. 3 is a view of the other end. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of another form of blank. Fig. 5 is a side view of a third variety of blank. Fig. 6 is a vertical cross-section on the line 00 of Fig. 5.
Like symbols of reference indicate like parts in each.
My invention is applicable to the construction of blanks for the manufacture of the tongues of all sorts of vehicles, including Wagons and agricultural machines-such as mowers and reapers and the like-and generally to the construction of any vehiclo-irons such as shafts, axles, singletrees, &c.where great strength is needed.
It consists of a bar of substantially trough or concave shape, having inwardly reflexed or looped portions 2, made by bending inwardly the sides 6 of a trough-shaped metal plate, as shown in the several figures of the drawings. The bar shown in Fig. 1, for a considerable port-ion of its length, is made by inwardly reflexing the portions 6', so that the inner sides thereof shall be in contact with each other and that the edges shall touch the inner middle part of the concave portion of the bar. A portion of the bar at the rear end is made of similar shape, except that the inner sides of the reflexed portions 6 do not touch each other, and the outer sides of the Serial No. 277,115. (No model.)
bar are fiat and not curved, as is that portion of the bar which is represented in Fig. .2.
The bar shown in Fig. 4 is of the shape in cross-section illustrated in Fig. 2. The bar of Fig. 5 is of about the same cross-section as that of Fig. 3, except that the corners c, where the reflexed portions 6' join the outer sides, e,
are squared, and the shoulders marked (1 are oblique and not rectangular. These different forms are shown for the purpose of illustrating some of the many shapes in which blanks can be made according to my invencombine great strength and rigidity with lightness in weight, and can be advantageously used for axles and many purposes.
1. A metal blank for vehicle-irons, consisting of a trough-shaped piece of iron having its sides reflexed inwardly, as at e, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. A metal blank for vehicle-irons, consisting of a trough-shaped piece of iron having its sides reflexed inwardly, as at c, with the edges of the reflexed sides in contact with the inner portion or base of the trough, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. A metal blank for vehicle-irons, consisting of a trough-shaped piece of iron having its sides refiexed inwardly, as at e, the inner sides of the refieXed portions 6' being in contact, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of June, A. D. 1888.
CYRUS M. OARNAHAN.
