WILLIAM J. LEWIS, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOLSTER-PLATES FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,344, dated March 30, 1875; application filed February 20, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM J. LEWIS, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bolster-Plates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in
which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved bolster-plate. Fig. 2 is a cross-section through 00 as, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of a pair of bolster-plates, showing their relative positions when in place on a wagon.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in each.
My invention consists of a bolsterplate having a raised or male ring on one side, and a correspondin g or female ring on the opposite side, so that such plate shall serve either as a male or female bolster-plate.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe it more fully.
The plate a is provided with a hole, I), for
the king-bolt, around which I form, on one side, a raised or male ring, 0, and on the opposite side a sunken or female ring, (Z. This plate may be made by rolling the iron out into bars of the requisite width and thickness, and cutting the same into the desired lengths. Then, by means of suitable (lies, the ring 0 01 may be stamped in the blank.
The ring and depression are so made that the metal forced in to make the depression or seat on one side is forced out to make the ring 0 on the other side.
If two of these plates are placed together, as shown in Fig. 3, they form a perfect set.
This plate is reversible, and may be used either as a male or female plate. It is fitted with screw-holes e, as usual.
YVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a bolsterplate having a raised ring on one face, and a corresponding depression on the opposite face, so that such plate shall serve either as an upper or lower bolster-plate, when used with a Second plate of the same form, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I, the said WILLIAM J. LEWIS, have hereunto set my hand.
T. B. KERR, JAMES I. KAY.
