UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SHERMAN M. GOSS, OE COUNCIL BLUFFS, IO\VA.
PARALLEL=RULER SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,828, dated March 5, 1889.
Application filed June 27, 1888.
To aZZ whom it may concern: l
Be it known that I, SHERMAN M. Goss, of Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Parallel-Rule, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invent-ion is to provide a new and improved parallel rule specially adapted for book-keepers and others for drawing parallel lines without the aid of a second rule.
The invention consists of a blade connected by links with a second blade extending parallel to the first blade.
The invention also consists in certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement. Fig. 2 an enlarged cross-section of the same on the line or. .r of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a like view of the same folded.
The improved )arallel rule is provided with a blade, A, formed of a rectangular frame, 13, having on its outer side an upwardly-turned edge, from which extends a downwardly-inclined flange, D, provided on top with a graduation, and being flush at its bottom with the frame B. On one end of the frame 1:) is formed a graduation, E. On the frame B are pivoted the links F, ii", and W, of which the link 1 is pivoted to the' outer side and the links F and 1* are pivoted to the inner side, as is plainly shown in Fig. 1. The links and F are pivotally connected with the outer side and the link F with the inner side of a rectangular frame, (Jr, forming part of the second blade, H,whieh is similar in construction to the blade A, and provided on its outer side with an upwardlyturned flange, I, continuing into the downwardly-extending flange J, provided with a graduation, K, and being flush at its lower end with the lower edge of the flange D and the bottom of the frame On one outer end of the frame G is formed a graduation, i K, similar to the graduation E. i
In the position shown in Fig. 1 the parallel-rule is extended, and when the operator holds the blade A firmly in place with one 11 and he can draw a line along the graduated inclined flange J, after which he swings the blade H to the left in the direction of the arrow a, whereby the outer edge of the flange J moves away from theline previously drawn, so that the operator is enabled to draw a second line along the edge of the flange J, said line being parallel to the line first drawn. The distance between the two lines depends upon the movement given to the blade H in the direction of the arrow (1. In a similar manner the operator can take hold of the blade H and draw the lines along the flange I) of the blade A and proceed in a manner similar to that above described in reference to the blade II. Then the blade 11 is swung in the direction of the arrow a to its innermost position. The links F, F, and I extend parallel to the sides of the frame B, and the blade II rests on top of the said frame I as is plainly shown in Fig. 3.
Having thus described my invention, what I 5 claim as new, and desire to secure b v l .etters Patent, is
l. A parallel-rule comprising a blade connected bylinks with a second blade extending parallel with the lirst blade, both blades being provided with inclined flanges having graduations, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a parallel-rule, the combination, with a blade provided with a rectangular frame having on one side an inclined flange provided on top with a graduation, of links pivotally connected with the said blade, and a second blade pivotally connected to the said links, and also provided with a rectangular frame having an inclined flange provided on top with a graduation, substautiall as shown and described.
3. A parallel-rule comprising a blade connected by links with a second blade extending parallel with the first blade, said links being connected alternately with the opposite and corresponding edges of the two blades, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
SHERMAN M. GOSS.
