COMBlNATlON-TONGS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,129, dated February 19, 1889.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective 3 view of a pair of tongs embodying my invention; Figs. and 3, detail views of the same; Fig. l, a view illustrating the invention in its preferred form, and Fig. 5 an end view of the same.

The tongs comprise a pair of levers or arms, A A, which may be pivoted to a handle, 13, as

shown in Fig. l, or pivoted to and crossing each other, and each provided with a separate handle, as shown in Fig.

At or near the free ends of the levers A, I provide each of the said levers with a laterally-extending U-shaped arm, O, which will advisably be flattened, so as to present a somewhat extended or fiat bearing-face, which shall be at right {ll'lQ'lOS to the lovers A, as clearly shown.

Beyond the lateral arms 0 the lovers are each provided with an extension, D, which may be furnished with meshing teeth a on their opposing faces, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to enable the tongs to more readily grasp 'pieces of wood or coal when it is desired to use them for that purpose, or provided with angular notches d, as shown in Figs. stand 5, to (it upon the stem or axle of the grate, and be thereby used as a shaker.
