R. 0. HEIKES. GUN HAND PROTEGTR.
No. 397,719. Patented Peb. `12, 1889.
N. PETERS. Phnwumognpmf. wmmgmmna UNITED STATES PATENT OrricEo ROLLA O. IIEIKES, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
GUN HAN DPROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,719, dated February 12, 1889. Application filed September 12, 1888. Serial No, 285,181. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, ROLLA O. HEIKES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery a-nd State of Ohio, have inventeda certain new and useful Improvement in Gun I-Iand-Protectors; an d I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
)Iy invention relates to improvements in a gun hand-protector used to protect the left hand in supporting the barrels of a doublebarreled shot-gun during rapid tiring to prevent the saine from being burned by the great heat so resulting.
My invention is a substitute for a glove which is ordinarily used for the purpose, the object being to thoroughly protect the hand against the heat of the barrels.
The object is accomplished by the-device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a top view of thehand-protector as attached to the barrelsof a shot-gun. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the hand-protector.
Like letters designate like parts throughout the several views.
B, Figs. l and 2, is a portion of the barrels of a shotgun, thc part immediately beyond the stock, and the part that is grasped bythe left hand when in the act of firing the same. A
(shown in the several figures) are views of the hand-protector. The same comprises the metallic plate 2,which covers the under surface of the barrels and is curved to embrace the sides ofthe same. It may' be made of spring-brass or any other suitable metal. Both surfaces of the metal are covered with leather, l, which is used to prevent the heat of the barrels being conveyed to the hand. Any textile fabric which is a good non-conductor of heat may be substituted for the leather covering, and the attachment of such non-conducting material may be made in any vconvenient manner, as by sewing, pasting, or riveting. The handprotector is slipped on over the ends of the barrels to a proper position to suit the grasp of the lett hand in firing the gun, and is there held by the resiliency of the metal, thus serv ing` to protect the hand during rapid firing.
Having fully described inyinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 4 A double-barreled-gun han d-protector comprising a spring metal handle lined With a non-conductor of heat, the edges of which bear against the upper surfaces of said barrels, thereby admitting of longitudinal ad justnient, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROLLA O. HEIKES.
