SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,663, dated February 12, 1889. Application filed February 24, 1888. Serial No. 265,099. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SIMON B. SIMON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Combined Match- Boxes and Canes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an improved matchbox specially adapted for use in connection with canes, umbrellas, and similar articles, and has for its object to provide a box which will not readily open when the cane or umbrella is carried, and wherein the fact that such an attachment is made will not be apparent.

The invention consists in providing a matchbox with a sliding lid and in the construction and combination of the several parts; and the invention further consists in the combination of the box with acane or similar article, as will be hereinafter fully described, and set forth in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in vwhich similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.

Figure l is apartial vertical section through a cane having the box attached. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the saine with the lid of the box open. Fig. 3 is a section on line Qc .fr of Fig. 2. Fig. Ll is a section of a slightly-modified form of the device. Fig. 5 is a vertical section through a box, illustrating another method of attaching the same to -a cane. In carrying out the invention x the cane A, as shown in Fig. l, is provided with a central longitudinal bore of suitable style, in which a box, a, is insert-ed, provided with an open top.

The outer upper surface of the cane is recessed to receive a collar, B, which collar is provided at the upper end with a diametrical bar, b, provided with an undercut groove, b', in the upper face, the upper face of the bar being fiush with the upper edge of the collar.

A lid, O, is provided for the collar, provided upon the under face with a central diametrical rib7 C', which extends from the periphery at one side nearly to the periphery at the opposite side. Between the peripheryY and the end of the rib a pin, b2, is passed through the lid, as shown in Fig. 3. rlhe rib C is of less depth than the groove b', and the collar is cut away at b3 opposite the groove to the depth of the rib. Thus, the rib being entered into the groove of the bar l), the lid will slide upon the collar and bar, limited in its forward and rearward movement by the said pin coming in contact with the inner edge ot' the collar, as shown in Fig. l.. In completing the attachment to the cane the collar is slid over the recessed portion of the latter and secured, a suitable groove having been cut in the box and top to the cane to receive the grooved bar.

If found desirable, the groove in the bar l) and the rib O may be made wedge-shaped, as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, or, as illustrated in Fig. 5, the rib may partake of the cylindrical contour of a segmental groove.

As an economy of material and labor, the rib maybe dispensed with and the under surface of the lid be left perfectly smooth, except at one point near the periphery, where a block, d, is attached, preferably by means of two pins or screws, as shown in Fig. 6. In this event the pin b2 is not needed, as the block traveling in the groove of the bar b not only serves to retain the lid in contact with the box, but also limits the movement of the lid, as shown in Fig. 0.

As illustrated in Fig. 5, the box may be made complete, having but one shell, to the bottom of which a screw is attached, which screw is adapted for entrance in the head of a cane, having, preferably, at the upper end a circumference equal to the circumference of the box at the base. Any additional means of attachment desired may be employed.

In practice it is sometimes found desirable to extend the rib from side to side of the lid, forming upon one end alug or making one end deeper than the body, in order that the proj ection thus produced may limit the forward and rearward movement of the lid. if

In Figs. 7, lO, and ll I illustrate another form of construction, wherein a continuous groove, e, is produced in the under side of the lid, the diametrieal bar e', attached to the box, having a wedge-shaped uppersurface adapted IOO to enter the groove in the lid. At each end of the said bar e a cylindrical projection, e2, is provided, adapted when the lid is closed to fill the ends of the groove. Near the periphery of the lid a pin, Z22, is projected downward into the groove7 which pin, coming in contact with the inner faces of the projections e2, limits the movement of the lid. In Fig. 7 I illustrate a box for pocket use, which is within the scope of my invention.

The construction illustrated in Fig. 8 is similar to that shown in Figs. 7, 10, and l1, differing only in that the groove e in the lid does not extend from end to end, and in consequence one projection, e2, upon the bar e is nearer the center.

In Fig. f) I illustrate the application of the box to a crook or T handle, which box may of itself constitute the upper member. rlhe lid in this case I have shown as constructed similar to that shown in Fig. 6-nainely, with a sliding block. The lid is made to open up- Ward, in order that when the cane is carried in the hand the latter will constantly keep the lid closed.

I contemplate the attachment of this box to various articles*such as sewing-cases, smoking-room tables, and other articles wherein ymatches may be handily and conveniently claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A cane-head formed of a tube having a dianietrical track across its upper or outer end and a lid sliding upon said track, substantially as set forth.

2. A cane-head formed of a tube having a recessed central diametrical track across its upper or outer end and a lid having a central diametrical rib on its under or inner face entering said recess, substantially as set forth.

3. A cane-head formed of the inner tube, a., to enter a socket in the upper end of a cane, having opposite notches in its upper end, the outer concentric tube, B, having a recessed track across its upper end resting in said notches, and the lid having a rib on its under side sliding in track-recess, substantially as set forth.

il. The combination, with a cane or similar stick, of a match-box consisting of a body provided with a diametrical track and a lid sliding upon said track, substantially as shown and described.

5. The combination, with a cane or similar stick, of a match-box consisting of a body provided with a diametrical track, a lid sliding on said track, and a stop limiting the movement of the lid, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
