Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID RING, OF DAMARISOOTTA, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CRUTCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,751, dated September l, 1863.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID ItiNG, of Daniariscotta, in the county of Lincoln, in the State'of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Orutch; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the application to the common crutch of a supporthook for the seat, connected by a rod to a spring inside of the crutch, so that the support to the person will rest upon the seat, instead of the arm-pit.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and' use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my crutch with a tube or barrel forming a part of the staff; also, a rest-hook connectel with a spring inside of the tube, after the following manner: A A is the stai of the crutch. Bis the barrel or tube. D is the support-hook. F is the spiral spring, as seen in plate 1, Figure 4. C is a piece of wood or metal placed inside of the spring F. E is the rod that connects the rest-hook D with piece of wood or metal O, the piece of wood or metal O being placed inside of the spring F, so that the upper end of the rod E rests upon the spring F. The lower end of the spring F rests upon the' end of the stati inside ofthe tube B, so that a person bearing his Weight upon the rest-hook D when walking is relieved from the jar or jolt attendant upon the common crutch. The rod E is made to play in its socket in the wood or metal O, so that a person can swing forwardV and still bear his weight upon the rest-hook.
- What I claim as my invention is- 'Ihe combination of the rest-hook, rod, spring, and tube, after the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
DAVID RING.
