STOPPER-I-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,885, dated January 29, 1889. Application filed June 23, 1888. Serial No. 277,944. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: M
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. MAIsER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stopper-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to furnish a stopper-fastener that shall be eflfective, simple, and strong, and which will prevent lat eral or sidewise movement of the stopper and serve as a guard or protector to the upper edge of the bottle or other vessel to which it may be applied; and to these ends the nature of the invention consists of the combinations of parts, including their construction, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention applied to a bottle-neck. Figs. 2 and 3 are side views showing the invention in its unlocked and locked positions, respectively; and Fig. et is a seetional view of the same, the parts being in the position shown in Fig. 3, looking to the left. Fig. 5 is a view of a modification of my invention, showing it adapted for securing the covers of jars.
In the embodiment of my invention I employ a bail, A, which is applied in the usual way to a bottle-neck, for instance, or to other receptacle, said application being elfected, it
may be, by passing and fastening a wire, at, around the bottle-neck and eoilin g it a number of times around the inwardly-bent lower ends of said bail.
The bail A is in its general contour right angular, having its vertical portions about in alignment with the middle of the bottle-neck or receptacle, while its horizontal portion stands a little above and outside and extends around about one-half of the upper edge of the bottleneck, protecting that portion oi the latter from breakage, to which it would otherwise be exposed. The bail A is formed at the points of intersection or union of its horizontal and vertical portions with open or closed eyes or loops 1) Z).
B is a lever which has inwardly-projeating portions or arms 0 c passing through the eyes or loops b b of the bail A and entering and bearing in sockets c 0, made in the ends of a ridge or elevation, (I, of the metal portion of the stopper (1. The inwardly-projecting portions or arms 0 c of the lever B are extended or bent out of alignment with the other or handle portion of said lever about in a plane at right angles thereto, and in addition are formed with oblique or zigzag portions 0 c interinei'liately of their points of connection with the stopper and bail. This construction brings the points of bearing of the arms or portions 0 upon the stopper out of alignment with the points of connection of the lever with the bail, producing an eccentric action thereby, to secure a locking action of the lever as it is moved into the proper relation therewith. It also permits of the disposition of the handle of the lever as it is locked, so as to stand adjacent to and surround the opposite portion of the upper edge of the bottle-neck to that surrounded by the bail to prevent the breakage thereof, to which it would otherwise be exposed.
From the foregoing it will also be seen that neither the lever nor ball will stand or projeot up in the way above the stopper or upper edge of the receptacle, as in this class of appliances as commonly constructed; also, with the inner ends of the lever-arms bearing or entering sockets in the stopper, the stopper will be prevented, when withdrawn or being replaced, from having lateral movement or sliding sidewise, whereby the stopper will always be in a position to be brought into alignment with the mouth of the receptacle or bottle-neck as the bottle is being stoppered or unstoppered. In the present instance the stopper is composed of metal and rubber, shown; but it may be made wholly either of metal or glass.
In operation it will be seen. that, it being desired to stopper the bottle, it is only necessary to properly grasp and insert the stopper into its place or seat therein, the hand being then removed from the stopper. Now, by
grasping the lever and forcing it down to its maximum limit the stopper will be locked or secured in place against displacement from any internal pressure or jarring. In order to displace or withdraw the stopper, the lever is forced upward, unlocking the parts, and the bail then forced to the opposite side of the bottle-neck and then downward, which will effect the withdrawal of the stopper from the mouth of the bottle, permittin it to be einptied of its contents, while the stopper still re mains attached thereto.
In-applying my invention to jars instead of forming the top with two sockets it is made with a continuous groove in its upper surface, and instead of providing the lever with separate arms these latter are in one continuous piece, while the handle portion of the lever is formed of two inwardly-extending portions, which are sleeved or soldered together.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a stopper or cover-fastener, the combination, with a bail having its upper end pro vided with eyes or loops and its cross-bar constructed and arranged to surround and protect one side of the bottle-neck or jar, of the lever having" connection with the stopper or cover and the eyes or loops of the bail and constructed and arranged to surround and protect the side of the bottle-neck or jar opposite that occupied by the cross-bar of the bail, substantially as set forth.
