BOOK-SHELF.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,813, dated January .29, 1889.

To (all 10710721 z'zi Ill fly cancer/1 :Be it known that I, JOHN MASON DUNCAN FRANCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Jos ph, in the county of Buchanan and State of )jiissouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Book-Shelf for Recon'l-l-Eooks, of which the 'fo'llowin is a :full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

Figure] is a front .view of my im nroved book-shelf. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, and Fig. 2-) is a perspective view of the same as in operation.

Myinvent-ion consists in certain features of construction and anovel combinatirm of parts, as 'will. be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the drawings, A indicates a sliding board or shell, which is provided on opposite sides with metallic bars B The bars B B are provided with mortises M), in which fittenons a a upon the sides of the sliding board A, as shown. The bars B are also provided with a tongue,b', the purpose of which will be presently explained. In the sides F F of the casing 1 are formed horizontal mortises f, into which are fitted the metallic bars C, which bars are provided with the grooves c, extending their length. Into these grooves c are fitted to slide the tongues b b of the bars B, which are secured to the sliding board A, as before dercribed. The sliding board A is provided with a suitable handle, G, which serves to facilitate its movement in the easing F.

In the operation of my improvement the sliding board A is drawn out of the casing 11, and when a record or other book is placed thereon it may be readily shoved back into place in the casing. By reason of the metallic bars 1] and U and their tongue-andgroove connections, as describcththc casv operation of the device is thereby much tacilitatcd. A l'OCfHtl-IMJUIC being placed on the sliding board and the board working in the casing in the manner before specified, said book is better preserved and protected from wear and tear incident to other book-shelves.

Having thus descri bed my invention, what I claim is In a book-shelf, the combination, with the casin g I and the metallic grooved bars C, socured horizontally in mortises formed in the sides of said casing, of the sliding board A, the metallic bars B, secured to the sides of said board A, said bars '13 provided with a mortise, b, to receive the tenon a of the board A, and a tongue, Z), adapted to fit and slide in the groove 11 of the bar (J, substantially as and :for the purpose described.
