Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
iMPROVED YSNAP-HOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,6 59, dated August 25, 1863.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, OLWER S. JUDp, of New Britain, Acounty of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, haveinvented certain newand useful Improvements in Snap-Hooks; andIdo hereby declare that the same is described and represented in the following specification and drawings, and to enable others skilled in the art to make and use, I Willpl oceed to describe its construction, and referring to the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.
The nature of this improvement will be t'nlly understood from the specification and drawlngs.
Figure lis a perspective view. Fig. 2 is an edge section View. Fig. 3 is a portion ot' the joint, showing the mode of its construction.
A is the hook. B is the loop, by which it is secured to a strap. C is a latch, which secures the opening into the hook. D is a hinge, formed at the junction of the hook with the loop, in which' the latch is secured. E is a semielliptic spring to hold thelatchin aclosed position. The hook, loop, latch, and spring` are made of any suitable kind of metal, and of such shape and proportion as required to produce the proper strength 'and richness of appearance. The spring E is made in the proper shape as to lit into a. properly-formed recess in the inside of the latch and hook at I their junction with the loop B. It Will be particularly noticeable that in making the joint for the latch, joint on the hook is formed open or it is formed or cast with ears F each side of the opeiling for the latch-joint pin, and are closed up over the piu :after the spring and latch are entered to their place, thus saving the labor of drilling for the jointpin, as in the usual way. Thus I am enabled to produce a cheaper, richer, and more durable hook.
I believe I have shown the nature and construction of my improvement so as to enable a person skilled to make and use the same.
What I claim, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is, as an improved mode of manufactureviz 1. Casting or forming the open eye for the joint-pivot in com binatiou with the loopB and hook A, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
2. rlhe employment ofthe spring E, in combination with the hook A and latch C, when fitted into a properly-formed recess inside of said hook and latch, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
O. S. JUDD.
