TAILORS AND DRESS-:MAKERS SQUARE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,396, dated January 22, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, PARKER FANT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing ters and figures of reference thereon, forming a partof this specification, in which Figure l is a plan view of the side of the square for marking the outline-points of the front form of a garment. Fig. 2 is a plan. view of a curved rule for marking the curved lines between the outline-points of a garment form, and for marking the darts of a garment; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the reverse side of the square for marking the outline-points of the back form of a garment.

Reterring to the drawings, 1% and S represent the square-blades proper ot the device arranged at right angles with each other. The blade l is prox'ided on its side having blade S with the extending blades (1, c, 6, 1,12, and r, the blade 0 being atright angles with blade B, and said blades (1, e, -i,' and u being arranged at various angles therewith to place the scales thereon in proper position for marking the proper outline-points of a garment.

A is a brace arranged parallel with blade 13, and is for the purpose of supporting the lateral blades, as shown, and 0 is a diagonally arranged brace connecting the extending ends of blades 01, r, and S, as shown. The side of the square shown in Fig. l bears the scales for marking the outline-points of the front form of a garment, which scales are arranged on blades B, a, c, and i, and on brace 0, and numbered from twenty four to forty six inches, as shown, representing the extremes of bust-measure. The reverse side of the square shown in Fig. 3 is for marking the outlinc-points of the back form of a garment, and is provided with scales for indicating said points on blades c, n, r, and S, numbered from twenty-four to forty-six inches, as shown, representing the extremes of bustmeasure. These scales may represent other and di'lterent numbersor characters, if desired, and may be differently located, to adapt the device for use in marking garments of different cuts or forms.

This square is intended to be used by tailors and dress-makers, and in use is laid upon the cloth to be marked and cut. A mark or point is made on the cloth opposite a corresponding number on each scale, the number representing the bust-measure of the person the garment is being fitted to, and the mark or points so made on the cloth will. be the outline-points of either a front or back form, according to the side of the square used. It the side shown in Fig. 1 be used to mark from, the front form of the garment will be outlined, and it the reverse side (shown in Fig. 3) be used the back form will be outlined. These outline-marks locate the angles or corners forming the outline of the garment. For the straight sides of the garment lines are run along the blades l3 and S, and the curved rule E (shown in Fig. 2) is used to mark the curved lines between the out-linepoints where the lines are to be curved, said rule being also used to mark the darts of the forms. The rule E is formed so that its sides are curved to correspond with any curved line it may be desired to mark between any two out lime-points, and may be of the form shown in said figure, or varied to suit the form being marked.

The bust measure having been determined, the device, as shown, can be used to mark garment forms for any person having a bust-measure between twenty-tour and forty-six inches.

The scales and the blades upon which they are placed can of course be made of. greater length, so as to mark out or outline terms of different sizes than those indicated.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows, to wit:

The tailors square shown and described, consisting of the combination of the rightangle blades 13 and S, the angle-blades a, c, c, '2', n, and r, and brace 0, all having graduated scales, as shown, and brace A, arranged parallel with blade B, for supporting said angleblades, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
