EMBROIDERY-FRAME.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,073, dated January 15, 1889.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE \V. CORY, of Kane, in the county of Greene and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Embroidery-Frame; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

My invention relates to an improvement in embroidery-frames, and is designed to combine with an ordinary small frame, upon which the part of the material to be embroidered is stretched, a support adapted to rest upon the lap of the operator and admit of being turned about horizontally, while the distender or stretcher may be tilted into any required inclination that the convenience of the operator may demand.

\Vith this end in view my invention consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, fully explained in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is. an elevation of the frame, showing a portion of the upper part in section, taken in the line 0/; 00, Fig. 3; and Fig. 2 is also an elevation, taken at right angles to the view shown in Fig. 1, exhibiting the stretcher or distender tilted into a plane inclined to the base-board, and a portion of each of the hoops of which the said stretching-frame con-' sists broken away to exhibit more fully the pivotal ar angement of the inner hoop; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device.

Referring to Fig. 1, A represents a flat baseboard, preferably circular in form, in which'are inserted at diametrically-opposite points, shown in the plan view, Fig. 3, two posts or standards, 0, to the upper ends of which are pivotally secured by wood-screws e, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or other suitable means, an ordinary stretcher or distendingframe, B, consisting of two hoops, Z) Z), one within the other, so arranged that when the portion of the fabric to be worked upon is drawn over the inner hoop the outer one will, by being brought down forcibly over it into the position shown in Fig 1, retain said fabric properly distended. It will be observed by reference to Figs. 2 and that the inner hoop, I), only is pivoted to the standards O, the enter one, I), being retained in position by friction, as it is made to fit tightly over the inner one when the material to be embroidered is drawn over it. Matters being thus, it will be readily seen thatthcpart to be worked upon can be easily brought into any required position by simply turning the whole frame round horizontally upon the lap of the operator and tilting the stretcher ll about its pivots c to any required iuclil'iation; and, further, the stretcher requiring no other support than the standards or posts C, secured at diametrically opposite points in the baseboard, there is nothing beneath the stretcher that can possibly be in the way of the hands of the operator.

I am well aware that the stretcher B, separately considered, is not new, and therefore I do not broadly claim such; but

In an embroidery-frame having a stretcher consisting of two circular hoops adapted to each other, as herein described, the combination therewith of a support consisting of two vertical standards secured immovably in a circular lap-board adapted to rest and permit of being rotated horizontally upon the lap of the operator, the inner hoop of the stretcher being pivotally secured at diametrically-01y posite points to the upper ends of the standards, as and for the purpose set forth.
