CHECK-DRAFT.
SPECIFICATION 'forming part of Letters Patent N o. 395,917, dated January 8, 1889.
Application filed July 5, 1888. Serial No. 279,126. (No model.)
To @ZZ who/1t t may concer/L:
Be it known that l, VILLIAM J. OWENS, of the city ol Utica, in the county ot' Oneida and State ot N ew York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Check-Drafts; and l do herebv declare that the following is a l'ull, cle-a r, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap1 ertains to make and use IO ence marked thereon, which t'orm' part ot' this specification.
M vinvention relates to an improvement in 15 check-drafts.
The object oi' in v invention is to provide a check-draft that is simple and etteetive, and that may also be operated by a chain or suit,- able connection from a distance.
In the drawings, Figure l shows a t'ront view ot' my improved check-draft. Fig. 2 shows a top view ot' the device as shown in Fig. l.
Like or similar letters and ligures ot' reference refer to like parts in both figures.
Flue l is provided with an opening in the side closed by a head, 2, the head being a plain surface. A damper, fi, is provided in pipe l, pivoted at l l in the head 2 and the wall ot' vline i, respectively. ln the head 2 is an opening, 5, opening into the tlue at one side ol' the damper, the opening beingadapted to be closed by swinging cover (i, pivoted 'to the head 2. The swinging covertl is provided with a gear-sector, T, which gear-sector partially surrounds the pivotal point of the swinging cover and is engaged b v gear-sector S.-
Gear-sector S is secured to the bearing 4 in the head 2 of the damper 3 and moves with it. A lever-arm, 9, is secured to gear-sector 8 and is provided for operating the same. A stop, l0, is provided for limiting the movement of the cover when the opening 5 is entirel;T closed thereby. A weight, 1l, is provided upon arm 9 forautomaticallv throwing the check-draft out ot' use and holding it in that position. A chain, l2, majT be provided for operating the draft from a distance. The damper 3 is arranged with reference t0 swing` ing cover 6, so that when the cover is moved the same, reference being had to the a-ccolnpanying drawings, and to the lettersl of relerfrom over the opening 5 the damper will stand crosswise ot the tine, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, and nearly close the same.
The operation of my device is substantially as follows: The current through the iue l being from the bottom toward the top as the device is shown in Fig. l, and it being desired to apply the cheek-draft, the lever-arm 9 is raised into the position shown in full lines in Fig. l, which movement moves, through the medium ol' the gear-sectors 8 and il, the cover t; from over the opening 5, and at the same time turns the damper cross'wise of the pipe, as it is shown in dotted lines in Fig. l. By allowing lthe lover 9 to descend into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. l the opening 5 is closed by cover 6 and the damper is turned lengthwise of the tine, so that the current through the l'lue is uninterrupted. Then the opening 5 is entirel)T closed by swinging cover 6, the edge of the cover G comes in contact with stop l0, which limits t-he farther movement of the cover and also arrests the `farther downward movement of arm 9.
The device can be used in any intermediate position between those described, it found desirable.
Various modifications which will readily suggest themselves may be made in my device without departing trom the spirit of my invention.
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The line and opening therein, `in combination with a pivoted lid having' a gear-sector partially surrounding the pivotal point, the damper in the flue having an extended pivotal bearing, a weighted arm held to the end ot' the pivotal bearing of the damper, and a gear-sector on the pivotal bearing arranged to mesh with the gear-sector on the cover, substantialljY as set torth.
2. The head having an opening', in combination with a pivoted swinging cover having a gear-sector partiallyv encircling the pivotal point of the cover, and the pivoted weighted arm having a gear-sector partially surrounding the pivotal point meshing into the gearsector on the cover, arranged substantially as set forth.
