UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J OI-IN MEIIIN KING, OE STECOAII, NORTH CAROLINA, ASSIGNOR OE ONE- I-IALE TO GEORGE E. BROOK, OF SAME PLACE.
RECTAL SPECULUVI.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 895,705, dated January 8, 1889.
Application filed April 2B, 1888,
.To all whom if #my concern:
`Be it known that I, JoHN MELVIN KING, of Steeoah, in the county of Graham and State ot' North Carolina, have invented a new and use` ful Improvement in Rectal Speeulums; and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention is an improved rectal speenlum, the particular points ot' novelty in said speoulum boing partieularly pointed out hereinafler.
This speeuluni is illustrated in the aecompanyin drawings, in which- Figure l represents the speoulum in perspective with all the parts in place. Fig. 2 shows a central longitudinal section of the same. Eig. 3 is a section on line a: ot" Fig. 2. In the drawings, A represents the tube ot' the speeulum, not materially different from the ordinary f'orm in respect to its main features. It is of the ordinary tubular and. tapering shape, with a liange, a, and fixed handle b. On the side opposite the fixed handle l) the flange a is cut away, and the tube is slotted from the fianged end throughout. Into the upper end fits a plug, B, and the edges of the end ot the tube are beveled down to the plug to form, when the plug is in place in the tube, as shown in l, a suitably-rounded end' adapted for insertion as a speeulum. On one side the plug has a shank,
d, which fits into a groove, e, in the inner face of the tube, so that the shank lies in place Serial No. 272,122. (No model.)
with its inner surface flush with that of the tube. It serves also to guide and hold the plug in proper position. The shank has an upturned handle at its outer end for manipulation. In the slot is fitted a sliding cover,
o', grooved on the edges to fit the edges of the slot, and forming when in pla-ee a part of' the tube. In this position the forward end of' the sliding cover bears against the rear of the plug and holds it in place; but the tube is tapering the plug may be released for withdrawing by a partial retraction only of the cover. The apparatus is Very simple and easily made. The plugI need not be turned to open or close any of the orilice, and it may be withdrawn readily. The Cover has the ordinary handle, e.
I claim as my invention- In a speeulum, the tapering conical tube having a slot throughout its entire length, a plug iitted to fill the end and having a shank fitted to a grooye in the inner faee of the tube, and a slide Covering the entire slot and bearing against the rear end of the plug, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOI-IN MELVIN KING.
