Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. DOUBLE- DAY, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have .invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attaching Reels to Fishing-Rods, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to thelac- Vcompanying drawings. l

The object of my invention is to construct a device for attaching a reel to a iishing-rod in j l such manner that while it may be readily con- 2o nected therewith and disconnected therefrom at will it shall not be liable to accidental displacements, while at the same time the device lis simple, cheap, and easy of construction and manipulation.

` Referring to the drawings, A represents a section of a rod,which may be either solid, as shown, or hollow,lil e the cane rods in Ordinary use.

B is a metal plate, curved in cross-section 3o to correspond substantially to the curved outer face of the rod, and secured thereto by screws, as indicated; or, when preferred, it may be attached by means of bands, or otherwise, as shall be preferred. rlhe edges of a portion of this 3 5 plate B are turned up, forming inclosingilips c c, the spaces between which and the plate B constitute ways or channels. At one end of the plate these lips are closed down, as at c c', and by preference a portion of the lips adja- 4o cent to the parts c" c is out away, in order that those parts may be bent down into contact with the body of the plate without carrying with them the adjacent portions of the lips c c. D is a carrier-plate, curved in cross-section, and having parallel sides, Which fit and slide easily in the grooves beneath lips c c.

E is the reel, attached firmly to plate D in any approved manner.

d is a locking-stud,which is thrust upward through an Opening, b', in the plate B, by means of a spiral spring, d', arranged within the cylindrical case b, attached to the under side of plate B, a hole being bored in the rod It .will of V to receive said case or shield b. course be understood that the lower or inner end of the lookingstud d is expanded, so as to rest upon the end of spiral spring d', and by `engaging with the under face of plate B prevent the stud from being accidentally detached 6o from plate B and case or shield b.

From an examination of the drawings it will be readily seen that by depressing the lockingstud d the reel and its supportingplate D can beveasily applied to the rod and removed therefrom.

It will be readily seen that the plate D might be attached to the rod by means of overlapping spurs or dogs, instead of the continuous lips c c, and that devices other than the locking-dog d might be employed for preventing the said plate D from being withdrawn from under such overlapping spurs or dogs.

It will be readily seen that my device is adapted to be used in attaching to rods the reels which are ordinarily sold in the market, from the fact that a very slight alteration in the width of plates D, to which such reels are usually attached, will enable such plates to be readily inserted under the lips c c.

Of course the locking-dog might be attached to a tongue-spring, having one end secured to the plate B, or to the fishing-rod independently of the plate, but in suitable position to thrust the dog outward in rear of sliding plate D. Y l

What I claim is- 1. In a device for attaching a reel to a iishing-rod, a concave plate adapted to be secured to the rod, and provided upon its sides with projecting lips to receive the sliding reel-plate D, in combination with a movable stop to prevent the accidental displacement of the reel, substantially as set forth.
