UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD K. BRENNAAUN,
or ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1905.
Application filed April 1, 1905. Serial No. 253,299.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD K. BREN- NAAUN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Dip-Net and Fishing-Rod Case, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined dipnet and fishing-rod case; and the object thereof is to provide an appliance of the class referred to for an lers use and which is so con structed that the handle of the dip-net can be used as the rod-case, and by such construction either the rod or the dip-net can be used for its individual purpose and which does away with the necessity of a person car rying a separate case for the rod and a separate dip-net.
The invention further aims to provide a combined di -net and fishing-rod case which shall be simp e in its construction, strong, durable, efiicient in its use, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter more specifically described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In describing the invention in detail refer ence is had to the accompanying drawings, wherein'like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is aside elevation of the appliance when the net is set up. Fig. 2 is a longitudinalsectional view of the appliance with the net detached. Fig. 3 is a detail of the strip which forms the band for the net-body. Fig. 4-is a detail of the clamping element. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6 6, Fig. 2; and Fig. 7 is a modification of the strip which forms the band for the net-body.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 6 of the drawings, 1 denotes the handle of the dip-net and which also forms the case. for the fishing-rod sections, as well as the case for the loop or band and net-body. The handle 1 is hollow and constructed of any suitable material, preferably metalfor example,sheet-tin or aluminium-a1though the handle 1 can be constructed of any desirable material. Constructing the handle 1 of metal forms a Water or damp proof case. The handle 1 is divided into a series of compartments by a longitudinally-extending partition 2. This partition 2 is formed, preferably, of a sheet of metallic material bent in a curvilinear manner, so as to form the said series of compartments, which are indicated by the reference characters 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. The handle 1 forms the outer wall of the said compartments, and the partition 2 the inner wall. The compartments 3, 4, 5, and 6 are for the fishing-rod sections and the compartment 7 for the netbody and a net loop or band. The compartment 6 is of such size as to receive the handlesection of the rod and is enlarged at one end, so that the handle end of the handle-section will properly nest in said compartment. The partition 2 does not extend the entire length of the handle 1, but terminates at a point removed from one end thereof, so that a coupling means between that end of the handle 1 and the net-body can be carried by the handle, said coupling means being inserted in that end of the handle. The opposite end of the handle 1 is closed through the medium of a removable screw-cap 8, so that easy access can be had to the handle, and when occasion requires the rod-sections, as well as the net-body and net loop or band, can be removed. The coupling means for the net body and loop or band consists of a plug 9, suitably secured in one end of the handle 1 and which is provided with an eccentricallyarranged opening 10, having the wall thereof screw-threaded, as at 11, and a clamping member 12 eXteriorly screw-threaded and adapted to engage the screw-threads 11 and provided near its outer end with a transversely-extending opening 13, preferably square in contour. The opening 10 through the plug 9 is arranged in alinement with the compartment 7, so that the net-body when occasion requires can be drawn into the handle in a manner as hereinafter referred to.
The loop or net-band is indicated by the reference character 14, and which is preferably constructed of a flat strip of metallic material provided at one end with an inclined notch 15, the function of which will be hereinafter referred to. The reference character 16 denotes the net-body.
When setting up the dip-net, the net-body 16 and band 14 are removed from the case and the band 14 is bent in the form of a loop and the ends of said band are passed through the opening 13 in the clamping member 12.
IIO
The member 12 is then screwed home for securely clamping the ends of the band 14 between the outer wall of the opening 13 and the outer end of the plug 9. The size of the loop can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing the length of the end portions of the band 14 on opposite sides of the clamping element 12. When it is desired to knock down the net, all that is needed to do is to loosen the clamping element 12, so that the band 14 can be removed therefrom and the net-body readily detached from the band 14.
The manner in which the net-body is placed inside of the handle is as follows: The clamping element 12 is removed and the strip 14 inserted through the opening 11, and when it is nearly through the handle 1 the net is connected to the strip 14 by means of the notch 15, and the strip 14 is then pulled through the handle, which carries the netbody 16 therewith and positions the netbody in the compartment 7. When the netbody is entirely within the compartment 7, the strip 14 is detached and also inserted in said compartment 7, the clamping element 12 is replaced, and the other end of the handle closed. The sections of the fishing-rod if the rod has been used and the use thereof discontinued are placed in their proper compartments before or after the drawing of the net and the placing of the strip in their com partment.
Referring to Fig. 7 of the drawings, a modified form of band for the net-body is shown, and the said modified form is adapted for use in connection with what may-be termed a trunk-case that is to say, the handle is of such size as to be placed in a trunk. The modified form of band is formed of two sections, (indicated by the reference characters 17 and 18,) so that the said band can be folded and inclosed in the handle 1, owing to the fact that the handle is not of as great length as the band when the latter is extended. The sections 17 and 18 are pivoted together, as at 19, and mounted upon said sections is a sliding coupling 20, so that when the sections are extended said coupling can be moved over the oint and prevent the sections from turning. When it is desired. to fold the band, all that is necessary to do is to slip the coupling 20 off of the pivotal ends of the sections 17 and 18, so that the said sections can be folded and inserted in the handle. The section 17 is provided at one end with an in clined notch 21 for the same purpose as stated in connection with the notch 15.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, is
