TO DANIEL W. BOSLEY, OF SAME PLACE.
WIN DOW-C LEAN ER'.
BPEGIFICATmN' wm ngm-rtof Letters Patent 110,395,267, dated-December 25,1888. Applicationfiled rebmey 1, 1887. Serial No.226,186. or was.)
' IO nected with a holder in such manner that the edges of said strip form the cleaning-surface; and the object of this invention is not only to promote the durability and lessen the cost of production of such cleaners, but to have such 1 5 clean er and its retaining devices of such form that they may be readily removed from the holder or handle socketand replaced by other cleaners varying in length as desired.
A further objectis to combine with the cleaning-surface and a cone for shaping the same a clamping-plate separate and removable from the holder, and, finally, to provide certain details of construction hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- T a Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the window-cleaner embodying my invention; Fig. 2,-a central vertical section thereof; Fig. 3, detail views showing the wooden core, flexible cleaning-strip, and the metallic clampingplate separated and in their blank form; Fig. 4, a similar view of thehandle ready for at tachment to the cleaner.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring by. letter to the accompanying drawings, A indicates a bar or core, preferably composed of wood, but may be of any other suitable material, triangular or prism shaped in cross-section, with the apex turned downwardly, the said core being of any desirable length, according to the dimensions of the 'window which they are designed to clean. About this core is wrapped a strip of sheet rubber or other suitable flexible material, B, the ends of said sheet bothprojecting beyond the apex of the core a sufficient distance to form a pliable edge, with one edge somewhat 5c in advance of the other on the side next the serves the purpose of strengthening the core handle, constituting a wiping or cleaning edge, O,'and a backing or supporting edge,-
'D, the said flexible strip being of substantially the same length as the core A. In order to utilize the elasticity of this flexible strip to the greatest extent, the core A" is slightly truncated, so that the tapering or wedge-like jectin'g ends of the cleaner-strips is not in the least interfered with.
The bending and clamping of this metallic plate may be accomplishedeither by hand or by suitable machineryfa'nd the said plate, besides serving the purpose hereinbefore mentioned, further-subagain'staccidental fracture. This much of the cleaner when completed has a general triangular outline, with the rubber strips proj ecting downwardlyand forming the apex, and the handle-socket F is designed to be secured to the inverted base of the core simply by clamping in the same manner as the rest of the parts are secured together, andvto this end the handle-socket F is formed of malleable iron, having depending lugs G G inclining 8 5 vtoward each other, thus forming a triangularshaped crotch, into which fits, the cleaner as a whole, thereby forming substantially a dovetail connection between the cleaner and handle-socket. -When thehandle-socket is slipped a sufiicient distance, either one of the lugs G is struck a slight blowsufficient, however, to make it clamp or bind upon the cleaner, and thus secure them rigidly in their relative norinal position.
It will be readily understood from the foregoing that the handle-socket may be separated from the cleaner and the parts of the latter separated from each other at any time and without the employment of any particular 100 skill, thereby enabling the ready substitution of a new flexible strip when the old one has become Worn beyond usefulness.
The triangular form of theclamping-plate and core materially increases the strength of the cleaner, in that the line of strain on the plate in operation is parallel with the line of supp0rt'that-is, With the bent edges of the plate-and by reason'of this peculiar shape of the said plate it hugs or clamps thecle'aner strip more tightly, and ofiers more resistance to the spreading of, the clamping-edges than 7 any other form of clamping-plate.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The core, the cleaner-strip, and the clamping-plate embracing said strip, in combination with a detachable handle-socket constituting a holder for said core, cleaner, and clampingplate, all substantially as described.
2. The core, the cleaner-strip, and a clamping-plate, in combination with a detachable handle socket having lugs, substantially as described, embracing said core, strip, and plate.
