Description
To all whom it may concern:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BEATIIE, JR., OF FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS.
CARBON ELECTRODE FOR ELECTRIC BATTERIES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,810, dated December 18, 1888.
Application filed July 5, 1888. Serial No. 279,117. (No specimens.)
Be it known that I, JOHN BEATTIE, J12, a citizen of the United States, residing in Fall River, county of Bristol, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Carbon, of which the following is a specification.
My invention or discovery relates to the manufacture of carbon, such as is used for electric batteries. v
The object of the invention is to provide a carbon which shall be comparatively light in weight, possessing a high degree of conductivity and great depolarizing properties.
The material which I have discovered and utilize is known under the following names: sedge-grass, salt-meadow grass, black grass, or salt-hay. This material is put into a retort or crucible with the cover luted on and heat applied until the substance has been thoroughly charred or carbonized. It may then be pulverized and mixed with sirup, pitch, or any of the well-known substances for molding purposes and shaped into any form. In working this material into shape I have found that the heavy pressures which have been required heretofore in the manufacture of carbons from other material are not required, because the material herein described, when combined with the well-known adhesive materials-such as sugar, pitch, &c.-will adhere with very slight pressure. In view of this fact and of the peculiarities of the material itself, the carbon plates are very light in weight.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is Blocks, plates, or rods to be used for electric-battery purposes, consisting of carbonized salt-hay or sedge-grass, pulverized and molded into shape with the aid of any kind of adhesive material.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN BEATTIE, JR.
