Description
UNI ED STATES PATENT DFFICE.
HANS JOACHIM VON METZRADT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CARBON CONDUCTOR FOR ELECTRIC LAMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 383,602, dated May 29, 1888.
Serial No. 257,150. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANS J OACHIM VON METZRADT, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carbon Conductors for Electric Lights, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the production of carbons for electric batteries, and the purpose of my improvement is to provide a carbon of great density and high resistance, which is not subject to deterioration through the influence of the acid,.whereby an intense light is obtained and the life of the carbon is greatly prolonged.
In the production of my composition carbons I take common coke, anthracitecoal, and gas-house remnants-that is, the carbon resulting from the distillation of coal which is of a hard flinty nature-and reduce them to a powdered condition. These materials are mixed in equal proportions, one-third of each.
When' thoroughly intermingled, I add onesixth part of silicate as a dry-binding mate- 25 rial-that is, silicate of potash or soda. The compound is then placed in molds and submitted to pressure. The plates or rods so formed are finally put into a crucible and exposed to a high temperature until they are 0 thoroughly dry and hard throughout.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A carbon for galvanic batteries, composed of one part of coke, one part of anthracite 35 coal, one part of gas-house carbon, and onesixth silicate, molded together, as. herein set forth.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two sub- 0 scribing witnesses.
HANS JOACHIlll VON illEIZRADT.
