SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,673, dated December 18, 1888.

Be it known that we, HUGO B'ISCHOFF, a subject of the King of Bavaria, and a resident of Berlin, Prussia, Germany, and AR- MAND MIEG, a subject of the King of Bavaria, and a resident of Leipsic, Saxony, Germany, have invented new and useful .Improvements in Project-iles, of which the following is a specification. s The invention relates to projectiles consisting of a hard-metal casing containing'lead or other similar material.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved caseprojectile having a guide-rin-gof soft metal to prevent rapid Wear of the grooves of the rifle-barrel, and at the same time to press the filling tightly into the metal casing. y
The invention consists in the construction hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a case'- projectile without a guide-ring. Figs. 2, 3, and -i are sectional elevations of case-projectiles provided wit-h guide-rings before being pressed in and illustrate various forms. Figs. 5 to 1l are sectional elevations of our improved case-projectiles, illustrating various forms; and Figs. 12 to 17 are side elevations of the same, illustrating various forms.
Case-projectiles are specially designed for small-arms, and consist of a strong hard-metal casing, a., containing afilling, b, of lead or other suitable material, as illustrated in Fig. 1. Such a project-ile, when pressed into the bore of a rifie, would naturally destroy the grooves or windings when fired throughv the same; and to obviate this objection Weprovide each projectile with one or more softmetal rings, c, which are pressed into the hard-metal casing a.. To accomplish this, we place the soft-metal ring or ringsc on the hard-metal casing a., and then place the projectile in a suitable press, of any approved construction, so that a high pressure is exerted against the soft-metal ring or rings c,
vwhich are thus forced into the hard-metal ring c rests is pressed into the lling b, which is thus pressed firmly and tightly in the casing a.. The dies for pressing the rings c into the hard-metal casing ay are of suitable shape, so as to press part of the ring c ush with the metal casing a, and at the same time leave an annular projection, c', as illustrated in, Figs. 6, 7, and 8 The dies of the press may also be of such a shape as to press the ring into conical form, as illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10; or the dies may be made of other forms of suitable cross-section. l
' It will be seen that part of the soft-metal ring c, projecting around the exterior of the hard-metal casing a., fits into the groove of the rifle-barreL'thus guiding the projectile through the barrel when fired, and, as the said ring is of soft metal, the grooves in the barrel are not injured.
In case `a spaceL is formed between the pressed-in ring c and the respective part of the hard-metal casing a., `as illustrated in Fig. 11, then the projectile receives, by means of a press, a pressure against its bottom, so that the filling b forces the respective part of the hard-metal casing a into the empty space and tightly against the ipressed-in ring c.
It will -be seen that our improved projectile, having a soft-metal ring, does not injure the grooves of the ride-barrel, and by pressing the said soft-metal ring into the hard-metal casing We force the filling material tightl into its casing. 'Y
'Having thus fully described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent# As an improved article of manufacture, a projectile consisting in a soft-metal core having a circumferential groove, a hard-metal case inclosing the sides and pointof the said core and provided with a circumferential depression, the internal ridge or shoulder formed thereby closely fitting in the said groove of the core,wand a guide-band fitting the said circumferential depression in the case and having a projecting part extending beyond the sides of the case topngage the grooves of the gun-barrel, substantially as set forth.
