UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
DENNIS H. BENNETT, OF ALLENDALE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH T() DELIVAN BENNETT, OF SHELBY, MICHIGAN.
CUTTING APPARATUS FOR HARVESTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,441, dated December 11, 1888.
Application filed January 23, 1888. Serial No. 261,(366. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DENNIS H. BENNETT, of Allendale, in the county ot' Ottawa and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cutting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in cutting apparatus for harvesters, and seeks particularly to provide convenient neans for securing the knives to the cutter-bar; and the invention consists in certain features of construction and novel combinations of parts, as will be hereinai'ter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a part of a cutter-bar provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof. 3 is a cross section drawn through one of the knives and alongside of the shank of the knife-sec nring button. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the said button, and Figs. 5 and G show somewhat different Constructions embodying the broad principles of my invention.
The cutter-bar A is provided with seats for the knives, such seats being Eormed between lugs or projeetions B, which have their opposite edges under-cut at b to properly receive the edges of the knives. As will be seen most clearly in Fig. 2, the seats diverge or widen toward the rear, and the knives are correspondingly formed, so that the knives are only movable into their seats from the rear side of the bar. Consequently when an obstruction is offered to the rearward movement of such knives when properly seated they will be locked in place. To such end I provide the knife-securing button C, which is pivotally secured to the rear side of the cutter-bar, and has a long side, 1, and a short side, 2. This part C, being practically an eccentric button, forms a stop by which to prevent the knife from becomingdetached from the cntter-bar.
In operation the button may be turned to bring the long side in engagement with the knife to secure the latter, or it may be set so that its short side will clear the knife and permit the same to be removed from the bar for the purpose of sharpening or for any other desred purpose.
In the Construction shown in Figs. 1, 2, and
3 the cutter-bar has a recess, a, in its rear side, and a threaded opening is formed from the inner wall of said recess to receive the screwshank of the button C, and the recess is fitted to receive said button, as shown. The knfe I) also, instead of having the button (I turning into and out of engagenent with its extreme rear edge, extends at its rear edge beyond the corresponding edge of bar A, and has a socket, 1)', formed from its under side, and usually entirely through it, as shown, to receive the long side of the button C. This construction is preferred, as by it the button is protected, being 'in a measure incased, as shown. This construction also avoids any projections on the real' edge of the knives, and I am enabled to t'orm the same practically unbroken.
In Figs. l and 3 the pivotin g of the button is shown as attained by providing it with a suren shank threaded into the cutter-bar, so that the button may be turned as desired. Manifestly, it' this shank were a plain pin j ournaled in the cutter-bar, as shown in Fig. G, there would be no departu-re from the broad principles of my invention, and when desired the pivot maybe effected by the aid of a separate pin, shown in Fig. 5; but I prefer the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. I also prefer to form the button with a nick, C to receive a screw-driver to facilitate the turnng of such part.
By the aid of my invention it will be seen that the cutters may be Conveniently removed when desired by giving the button a quarter or half turn, and may, when replaced, be secured by reversing said movement.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is l. The cutter-bar having a seat for the knife and the knife movable into said seat from the rear, combined with the securing-button mounted pivotally on the cutter-bar, whereby it maybe turned to present an obstruction to the rearward movement of the knife, the pivotal aXis of said button being approximately parallel to the plane of the knife, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the cutter-bar having a seat for the knife, which seat flares rearwardly, the knife having a portion fitted to IOO said seat and movable thereinto from the rear, and a stop mounted 'on the outter-btr and adjustable into position to present an obstruction to the reztrward movement of the knife, substantially as set forth.
The combination of the cutter-bar having a seat for the knfe, the knfe fitted to said seat, and an eeeentrie button nounted on the cutter-bar and adjustable, the pivot-al axis of said button being approximately parallel to the plane 'of the knife, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
4. The cutter-bar having the knife-seat and the knife therein, combined with the ecoentric button provided With a screw-shank threaded into the cutter-bar, Whereby said button may be set to engage the knife, the pivotal axis of said button being approximately parallel to the plane of the knife,substantia11y as set forth.
5. The cutter bar having seats for the knives, combined with the knives fitted in said seats and having slots D', and the eccentrio buttons pivotally nounted on the bar and adtpted to enter the slots D', the pivotal aXis of said button being approxinately parallel to the plane of the knife, substmitially as set forth.
G. The improvement in eutting apparatus herein described, the same eonsisting of the cutter-bar forned with seats for the knives, which seats are fiared rearwardly, said bar havi'g recesses formed in its rear edge and :L threaded opening leading from the front wall of said recesses, the knives fitting the seats of the cutter-bar and provided With Slots or openings which coincide with the recesses of the cuttenbm', and the eceentrc buttons in said recesses adapted to enter the slots and provided with screw-shanks which turn into the threaded openings of the cutter-ba', allsubstantiully as and :for the purposes specified.
