UNiTEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL A. JOHNSON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SPRING-INSOLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,188, dated December 11, 1888.
Application filed July 27, 1888- Serial No. 281,241. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL A. JOHNSON, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Insoles, of Which the following, taken in connection With the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to spring-insoles designed to be used inside of boots or shoes; and it has for its object the protection of the foot of the wearer and to give ease in walk ing, and especially to absorb the vibrations caused in walking in places where the wearer is subjected to a continual jarring. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1, 2, and 3 represent my spring-insole in plan, inverted plan, and central longitudinal section, respectively.
The insole is of a common form, made usually of leather, and it has fastened to its heel portion (underneath) the folded spring 11, of steel or other suitable material, by means of the metal clamp 12 and rivets 13 and 14. The spring is of the V-sectional form, as shown, and is provided with the straight-bent portion 15, of considerable length, and the openings 16 and 17. The object of this construction is to produce a strong spring of light weight, and at the same time to suitably provide for the application of the clamp 12, by means of which and the rivets 13 and M the spring is securely clamped to the insole in such a manner will not interfere with the spring action of the folded spring.
The operation of my invention is as follows: A pair of the spring-insoles, fitted to a pair of boots or shoes in the usual manner, will present to the wearer an easy spring resistance to the foot, thereby relieving the foot from rigid contact with the boot at the same time it absorbs the jarring effects commonin \valking-especially in the case of conductors and drivers of railway-carswho are subjected to continual jars.
My invention possesses the following advantages: It is effective because it is very strong and light; itis cheaply made and applied, and it is only subjected to the wear caused by its service as a spring. When worn out, itcan be readily and cheaply replaced, because it is not an integral part of the boot or shoe.
I am aware that previous to my invention springs have been applied to the heels and soles of boots and shoes. I therefore do not claim such a combination; but
'hat- I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a spring-insole, the insole 10, provided with the spring 11, substantially as shown and described.
2. A spring-insole provided with the insole 10, in combination with the folded spring 11, provided with the straight-bent portion 15 and openings 16 and 17, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In a spring-insole, the combination of the insole 10, with the folded spring 11, clamped to said insole by means of clamp 12 and rivets 13 and 14:, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 16th day of July, A. D. 1888.
