4849. Minto, G. March 6. Walking, appliances for aiding.-Relates to appliances for aiding in walking, and for reducing the wear and tear of boots by raising them out of contact with the ground. Fig. 1 shows a rear view, Fig. 2 a side view, and Fig. 3 an inverted plan of one. It consists of a plate c to which is secured by pillars d a curved channel-iron a containing a strip b of india-rubber or other resilient material. The heel portion of the plate c may be hinged as shown at c<1> to the forward portion, and has secured to it a heel case f to which is attached a strap g or other fastening- device. The rear ends of the channel-bar a have secured to them pillars h passing through holes in the plate c and surrounded by springs i. The toe of the boot fits within a toe-cap e secured to the plate c. The bar a is bent into an arc, as shown in Fig. 2, so that no shock is felt in transferring the weight from the heel to the toe, while the springs i absorb the concussion due to the heel's first contact with the ground.
