UNITED STATES PATENT ()FEICE.
LEBRECHT HEUMANN, OF COLOGNE, PRUSSIA, GERMANY.
DRESS-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,979, dated December 4, 1888.
Application filed June 1, 1888. 8611's.]. No. 275,728. (No model.) Patented in France March 17, 1888, No. 189,417; in England April 9, 1888, No. 5,268; in Belgium May 11, 1888,11'0. 81,773, andin Italy June 30, 1888,11'0- 28,493.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEBRECHT HEUMANN, a subject of the King of Prussia and Emperor of Germany, and residing at Cologne, Province of the Rhine, Prussia, have invented an Under-Garment for Use with Corsets, r t which the following is a specification.
The obj ect of my invention is to provide an under-garment which will hidethe outline of the top of a corset, absorb the perspiration from the wearers body, but also possess suflicient stiffness to retain its own proper form, fitting the body of the wearer, and an external lining impervious to water, which will prevent the perspiration from passing through to the outer garments. This object I attain by the construction herein after particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents my improved under-garment in front elevation in use on the body of the wearer. Fig. 2 represents, on a larger scale, the right-hand flap detached. .Fig. 3 represents a section through Fig. 2 on the line a: y.
A designates the corset, the upper edge of which is to be covered by the said under-garment. The latter consists of two flaps, a, which taper toward the central line of the corset, where they are secured together, preferably by buttoning. In one of these flaps awatchpocket, g, may be forined,as indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 1-. Each of these flaps passes under one of the armpits, and is there provided with a water-proof pad, I). It also extends in front to the top of the shoulder, from which point a shoulder-band, h, extends down behind the shoulder to the material of said flaps at the rear of said pad. The shape of said flaps is such as to fit snugly against the person of the wearer. Four things are required of them: first, to retain such shape; secondly, to absorb the perspiration from the wearers body; tl'. irdly, to prevent the perspiration from passing through them to outer garments, or so as to be unpleasantly visible; fourthly, to hide the upper edge of the corset, as already stated. I therefore construct each flap of three heterogeneous layers of material, the outer layer, 0, being water-proof, the inner one, (I, being of absorbent textile material, the middle one, 9, beingof horse-hair to provide the necessary stiffness. Ordinary braid is used for binding the edges of each flap. The layer of horsehair preferably extends only as far as the line f, Fig. 2, stiffness under the arms not being desirable.
I am aware that the upper edge of a corset and the person of the wearer above the same have been covered by an under-garment made of two textile layers, with a layer of indiarubber or other water-proof material between them. This I do not claim.
I am also aware that hair-cloth has been used as a stiffening-lining for coats. This also I do not claim.
hat I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the shoulder-bands h, the pads b, and the flaps a, each flap having an inner layer of absorbent material, an outer layer of water-proof material, and an intermediate layer of stiffening material, the whole forming an under-garment which hides the upper edge of the corset, absorbs the perspiration fromthe body of the wearer, prevents this perspiration from reaching the outer garment, and maintains its own shape and position, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LEBRECHT HEUMANN.
