Description

UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
ENOS T. HIGHAM, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND D. HIGHAM, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVED WINDOW-SHADE HANGINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,319, dated July 21, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ENos T. HIGHAM, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in the Hanging ot' Window- Shades; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of refer ence marked thereon.
My invention consists of a roller, combined with a peculiar system ot cords, the whole being arranged and operating as described hereinafter, whereby the shade which is secured to the roller may be made to cover the lower portion of a window and leave the other portionexposed, or may serve the purpose of an ordinary shade.
In order to enable others to apply and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The gure in the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this speeilication, represents my improvement in the hanging of windowshades.
A A represent the window-frame, and B tLe roller to which the blind O is attached. One journal of the roller turns in a hook, D, attached to a cord, E, which passes over a pulley, F, 0n a plate secured to the windowframe, and over a similar pulley, It", the opposite journal of the roller turning in a hook, D', attached to a cord, G, which also passes over the pulley F', the two cords being coniinued downward to a', where-they are united and become one cord, H, which passes round the usual adjustable pulley I, and upward to an eye, K, to which the end of the cord H is secured. Through the eye K passes an endless cord, L, which passes round a pulley, M,
on the blind-roller B. Vhen it is desirable to cover the lower portion ot' the Window with the blind and to leave the upper poition of the window exposed, the cord H is p1 led at a point near the eye. K, when the roller with its blind will at once descend, the roller always retaining its proper horizontal position, owing to the arrangement of the cords E and G and the pulleys over which they pass. YWhen the roller, with its blind, has to be raised, the cords E and G are pulled downward, and'when the blind has to be wound or unwound from the rollerB the endless cord is operated, this cord being always in a condition to perform its duty, no matter what may be the position of the roller.
I am aware that the object of my invention has been heretofore attained, but by a system of cords and pulleys diering very materially from that described above.
I therefore restrict my claim to and desire to obtain Letters Patent for- The roller B, hung to a cord, E, passing over a pulley, F, and to a cord, G, passing over a pulley, F', the cord H united to the said cords E and G and connected to an eye, K, or its equivalent, and the endless cord L, passing through the said eye K and round a pulley, M, on the roller B, the Whole being arranged for joint action, as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ENOS T. HIGHAM.
