SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters f'atent No. 392,410, dated November 6, 1888.
Application filed February 15, 1888. Serial No. 264,075.
Be it known that I, J osEPH OLoUGH, of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Window-Fastener, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved window'fastener applied to a window-sash, the sash and easing being shown partly in section; and Fig. 2 is aside sectional elevation of my improved window-fastener.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
My invention is an improvement in the class of window-fasteners consisting of two pivoted cams which are simultaneously thrown out of action-i. 6., out of contact with the window-sash-by means of a pivoted lever, which is in some manner connected with both cams.
The improvement is embodied in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter shown and claimed.
Thebody A, in which the movable parts of the window-fastener are'mounted, consists of a flat rectangular plate, a, provided with an oblong mortise, b, surrounded by a casing, c, on the inner side of the plate, terminating in two pairs of ears, d (1. Between the ears d is placed a lever, 13, upon the pivotal pin e. The shorter arm of the leveris curved and serrated, forming the serrated cam f, which is capable of projecting beyond the face of the casing c. On the opposite side of the pivotal pin e the lever B is curved and rounded, forming a handle, by which the cam f may be operated.
In the lower part of the casing c is placed a cam, 9, upon the pivotal pin h. The cam g is provided with a curved serrated face, i, similar to that of the camf. The free end of the cam g terminates in a straight arm, j, which lies within the path of the cam f. The cam g is prolonged beyond its pivot and formed into a hook, k,which receives one end of the spiral (No model.)

The body A isinserted in a mortise in the stile m of the window-sash O,with the lever B extending through the stile opposite the window-glass. The cams g f are oppositely arranged with respect to each other, and both cams are thrown outward toward the windowcasing D by the action of the spring Z. When an attempt is made to raise the window-sash without manipulating the lever B, the cam g bites into the window-casing and engages it so as to prevent the raising of the sash. In like manner, if the window is raised and an attempt is made to draw the sash down, the casing will be engaged by the serrated cam f.
When it is desired to release the cam so as to permit of moving the sash up and down, the lever B is turned on its pivot so as to withdraw the serrated cam f from the window-casing,
thereby releasing the said cam, and at the same time the cam f engages the straight arm j of the cam g, withdrawing it from the casing D,
when the sash is free to move. Upon releasing the lever B the spring Z again brings the cams into engagement with the window-casing.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The combination, with the slotted plate, of the following parts arranged substantially as shown and described: the pivoted lever B, projecting laterally outward and having its inner end curved downward to form a cam,f, the cam g, pivoted below the said lever and having its inner end curved upward and provided with the arm j, which lies within the radius of said cam f, and the spring Z, connecting the said bar and cam g exteriorly of their pivots, whereby said parts are adapted to operate as specified.
