Definitions

  • ABSTRACT A water-tight roof verge edge trimming for preventing ingress of rain water under the space below a gable roof or a shed roof of a building comprises a flashing having an elongated main planar part adapted to be mounted on andalong the top of a gable or wall with sloping top and formed with rain water interrupting ridges extending along the length of the planar part.
  • An upstanding wall is formed along the outer side of the planar part and has an inwardly bent top flange formed to define an inwardly open space between the planar part andthe flange, in which space an elastic sealing member is fitted for sealing engagement with the side edge of the gable or shed roof.
  • This invention relates generally to building roofs and to the prevention of ingress of rain water into the space below a roof, and more particularly to a water-tight roof verge edge trimming for buildings having gables and gable roofs or shed roofs.
  • each trimming must be adaptable to a wide range of conditions such as, for example, different thicknesses and profiles of the roofing structure at the verge edge thereof and different lengths of overhang of the roofing structure outward beyond the wall with sloping top edge.
  • Another object of the invention is to provide a watertight roof verge trimming which is highly adaptable to various kinds of roofing materials and a wide range of installation conditions.
  • Still another object of this invention is to provide a watertight roof edge trimming which is simple in construction and hence affords easy installation work and lower installation cost.
  • a water-tight roof verge trimming for a building having a wall with sloping top edge and a gable roof or shed roof comprising: a flashing composed of an elongated main planar part adapted to be mounted on and along the sloping top of the wall and having ridges extending longitudinally of the planar part, and an upstanding wall integrally formed along the outer longitudinal side, with respect to the wall, of the planar part and having a top flange bent inwardly with respect to the wall substantially in parallel with the planar part, the planar part, upstanding wall, and top flange defining a space extending longitudinally of the flashing and opening inwardly; and an elastic sealing member fitted in the space to sealingly engage the side verge edge of the gable or shed roof.
  • FIG. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a flashing and a sealing member fitted therein, of the roof verge trimming according to this invention
  • FIGS. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the roof verge trimming as applied to a gable and a gable roof; and i FIG. 3 is a section taken along the line III III in FIG. 3, showing themanner of sealing engagement between the gable roof and the sealing member.
  • the water-tight roof verge trimming comprises an elongated flashing generally designated by reference letter F and extending along the side verge of a gable roof R as shown in FIG. 2.
  • the flashing F is made of a suitable water-resistant material such as a metal in sheet form and comprises a main planar part 1 formed with spaced apart parallel ridges 2 extending longitudinally of the planar part, and an upstanding wall 3 formed integrally with the planar part 1 along the outer side edge of the same.
  • the upstanding wall 3 has an inwardly bent flange 4 on the top thereof.
  • the planar part 1, the upstanding wall 3 and its flange 4 define a longitudinally extending space in which an elastic sealing member 5 is fitted.
  • the sealing member 5 may be made of a foamed synthetic or natural rubber or a foamed synthetic resin.
  • the main planar part 1 is folded back at 6 along its other inner edge.
  • the flashing F is mounted on the sloping top of a gable wall 8 with the main planar part 1 thereof fixedly secured to the top surface of the wall 8 by any suitable means known in the art.
  • Each of roofing sheets 7 forming the roof R is then caused to abut the sealing member 5 at its gable verge end and is pressed into the same until a sealing engagement is established between the roofing sheet 7 and the sealing member 5.
  • the roofing sheet 7 is then suitably secured in position by a known method.
  • each of the roofing sheets 7 may be secured in position to form the roof R in advance, and then the flashing F may be secured to the top surface of the wall 8 to obtain the above mentioned sealing engagement between the roofing sheets 7 and the sealing member 5.
  • the construction of the roof verge edge trimming can be effected easily by merely securing the flashing F to the top of the wall 8. It will also be apparent that rain water on the roof R is prevented from entering the space thereunder because of the sealing engagement between the roof R and the sealing member 5. Should the rain water enter the space under the roofing material because of some unexpected breakage or damage of the sealed part, it is prevented from flowing inward because of the provision of the ridges 2, and even if the rain water should flow over the ridges it is arrested by the bent-back portion 6 of the planar part and caused to flow down along the flashing. Therefore, infiltration of rain water into the interior of the housing is completely prevented by the roof verge edge trimming according to this invention.
  • roofing sheets are used for engagement with the sealing member
  • the trimming according to this invention is also effective when used with roofing tiles, slates, and other roofing materials.
  • This advantageous feature is afforded by the adaptable nature of the resilient sealing member 5, particularly when its height, i.e., distance of the flange 4 above the planar part 1 is made large.
  • the sealing member 5 can accommodate a wide range of thicknesses of the roofing material 7.
  • planar part 1 can be made sufficiently wide, in the direction transverse to its longitudinal direction so as to be adaptable to different lengths of overhang of the verge edge of the roofing material 7 outward beyond the wall 8.
  • an elongated main planar part secured to the slopan upstanding wall fonned along the outer longitudinal side, with respect to said wall, of said planar part and having a top flange bent inwardly with respect to said wall substantially in parallel with said planar part, said planar part, upstanding wall, and top flange defining a space extending longitudinally of the flashing and opening inwardly;
