THILL COUPLING.
N0. 391,701. Patented Oct. 23, 1888.
7/CZZW`ESSES MW l v GEORGE C. FRISBIE, F CEASES MILLS, PENNSYLVANIA.
THllLLnCOUPLlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,701, dated October 23, 1888.
Application tiled July 31, 1888. Serial No. 281,487. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. FRIsBIE, a citizen of the United States ot' America, residing at Ceases Mills, in the county of'Lnzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thill- Couplings, of which the following is a speciication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in combined thill-coup lings and devices for detaching horses from vehicles; and it comprises the detail, construction, combination, and arrangement of parts I substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and
particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying` drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view on the line x x, Fig. l; and Fig. 3 isa detail perspective view.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the front axle of a vehicle, and a a the ordinary clips, from each of which project two apertured ears, a a.
B B are two clips secured to axle A at points adjacent the clips a, and the lower threaded `endsot' these Clips B 'are extended through apertures of yokes C C and are fitted with nuts, which secure said yokes in place. The outer ends of these yokes C are bent upwardly, and their cxtreme ends are rounded, as shown, forming eyes or loops b b', as shown.
A third yoke plate or arm, D, is attached to axle A,near the center thercOf,and is provided withan upwardly-projecting hooked or bent end, d.
E E are two sliding rods or arms, whioh are projected through and guided by the eyes or loops b of yokes C, and the ends of said rods or arms are designed to work in the apertured ears aof end clips,ct. One of these rods or arms is provided with a ring or collar, a2, to limit the movement thereof. `The inner ends of these rods or arms E are pivotally connected to a lever, e, fulcrumed on a stud, e', of aplate, e2, attached to axle A, said rods or arms being secured at equal distances from the fulcrum ofsaid lever. When in an approximately-bmi zontal position, this lever E is held by the hooked end of yoke or arm D, and when thus held the ends of rods or arms E are held extended through the ears of the end clips, thereby effect-ing the coupling ofthe thillirons to said clips.
To uncouple or detach the thills, the lever e is withdrawn and lowered into a vertical position.
I am aware that it is not new to employ a centrally-pivoted disk having a lever and outwardly-projecting arms, the ends of which secure the thills, and hence I do not lay claim to such construction, my invention being designed as an improvement thereon, embodying as it does advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general eficiency.
I claim as my inventionl. As an improvement in combined thillcouplings and devices for detaching horses, the two sliding rods or arms, the-lever fulcrumed upon a centrally-disposed plate, and the yoke plate or arm D,having a bent or hooked end by which the end of said lever is held, substantially as shown and described, said rods or arms being secured to said lever, as stated.
. 2. The combination, with the axle and the clips having apertured ears, of the horizontally-disposed rods or arms, the central lever to which said rods or arms are secured, the fulcrum stud or pin, together with its plate, secured to said axle, the yoke plate or arm D,hav ing a bent or hooked end by which lever is held in a horizontal position, the clips B, and the yoke-plates C C,having eyes or loops for guiding said rods or arms, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I altix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE C. FRISBIE.
