NE CK-YOKE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 20, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BERNARD J. DORAN, BRYAN STURM, and SAMUEL HINKLE, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Havelock, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Neck-Yokes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in neck yokes, and its primary object is the provision of a device of this character which is adapted to be connected toa wagon or buggy tongue for movement thereon in any direction.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means adapted to secure the yoke in applied position against accidental displacement.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a neck yoke and securing means which are simple, durable and efficient and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing where- 1n,
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a neck yoke constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view illustrating the manner in which the neck yoke is adapted to be secured in applied position. Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of one of the socket members. Fig. 4 is a view in end elevation thereof. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of one end of the neck yoke when designed for application to buggies. Fig. 6 is a view in side elevation of the device adapted to securev the neck yoke on the tongue of a wagon. Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the device adapted to secure the neck yoke on a tongue of a buggy. Fig. 8 is a view in side elevation thereof.
The neck yoke is preferably constructed of metal and comprises relatively spaced members 1. The members 1 are inclined upon each other in the direction of the longitudinal center of the neck yoke and from points equally spaced from the transverse center thereof. The formation of the members 1 provide arallel portions Z'Which are located centraly between the ends of the neck yoke, .and the ends of the members are united and formed to provide eyes 3 or ferrules 4. on a wagon, the ends thereof are provided. with the eyes 3, while when it is to be used upon a buggy, the ends thereof are provided with ferrules 4.. The wagon neck yoke is provided with rings 5 which are secured thereto through the medium of the eyes 3 and to which the yoke straps are adapted to be securec which the yoke straps are adapted to pass and which are adapted to prevent the yoke strap from becoming accidentally detached from the neck yoke. The members 1 are held in their relative spaced relation by means of irons 7 which are provided with flanges 8. The irons 7 are secured in applied position by means of rivets 9, or their equivalent, which pass through the members 1 and flanges 8. g
. A pair of socket members 10 are secured in relatively spaced relation to and between the portion 2 of the members 1. The members 10 are secured in applied position by means of bolts 11 which pass through the portions 2 of the members 1 and through bores 12 formed in said members. The inner or opposing surfaces of the members 10 are formed to provide semi-spherical sockets 13 and semi-circular recesses 14 which extend from their relatively inner and outer surfaces to the sockets 13.
A spherical body 15 is mounted in the sockets 13 of the members 10 and is provided with a passage 16 which is adapted to receive the tip of a wagon or buggy tongue and which extends diametrically through the spherical body. Annular projections 17 are formed on the body 15 about the passage 16.
In view of the manner in which the spherical body 15 is secured, it should be apparent that the neck yoke may move freely in any direc tion upon a wagon or buggy tongue.
The means for securing the neck yoke to the tongue of a wagon comprises a forked body portion adapted to receive the end of the tongue, a cylindrical shank 18 adapted to be received by the passage 16 of the spherical body 15 and a spring latch 19 adapted to engage the relatively outer flange 17 of the spherical body to prevent the neck yoke from becoming accidentally displaced. The device adapted to secure the neck yoke to the tongue of a buggy comprises a hollow conical body 21 adapted to receive the end of tee buggy tongue, a shank 22 adapted to be'received by the passage 16 of the spherical body 15, and a spring catch 23 adapted to engage the relatively outer member 17 of the spherical body to prevent the accidental displacement of the neck yoke.
It should be apparent from the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, that we provide a neck yoke which is simple, durable and eliicient, which can be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost and which may freely move in any direction on the tongue.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new, is 1. A neck yoke including a pair of" members provided with semi-spherical sockets and with semi-circular recesses, and a spherical body mounted in the sockets, said body being provided with a passage extending diametrically therethrough.
2. A neck yoke including a pair of members provided with semi-spherical sockets and with semi-circular recesses, and a spherical body mounted in the sockets, said body being provided with a passage extending diametrically therethrough and with annular projections formed thereon about the ends of the passage.
8. A neck yoke including a pair of mem- :1
bers provided with semi-spherical sockets, a spherical body mounted in the sockets and provided with a passage extending diametrically therethrough, a body provided with a shank fitting in the passage of the spherical body,-and a latch carried by said shank for engagement with the spherical body.

A neck yoke com 'irising relatively spaced members provided with inclined portions and intermediate parallel portions, the outer ends of the inclined portions being united, flanged irons secured to and between the inclined portions of said members, other members secured to and between said parallel portions and provided with semi-spherical sockets and with semi-circular recesses, and a spherical body mounted in the sock ets, said body being provided with a passage extending diametrically therethrough and with annular projections termed thereon about the ends of the passage.
