DOUBLETREE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,382, dated October 22, 1895. Application filed December 21, 1894:. Serial No. 532,558- (No model.)
To all whom, it mayconcern:
Be it known that I, OWEN MCDERMOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jacinto, in the county of Riverside and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improved Doubletree, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of doubletrees which are designed to bring the singleto trees as near as practicable into the plane of the tongue to which the doubletree is attached.
The object of my invention is to provide a doubletree of this class of very great simplicr 5 ity and'possessing greater strength in comparison with its weight than doubletrees heretofore known and constituting an integral doubletree which is complete in itself for attachment by clevis and pin to the tongue and by stay straps or chains to the axle.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 shows my improved doubletree in place upon the tongue, a fragment of which 2 5 is shown and having the singletrees in place.
Portions of the stay-straps are also shown in place attached to the doubletrea. Fig. 2 is a View of the doubletree detached without the singletrees and stay-straps.
My invention consists in an integral doubletree, comprising two bars a, a, provided with singletree pin-holes b b and the clevis pinholes c 0', and united by the combined staystrap, clevis, and bar-connecting loops 6 e,
5 arranged, respectively, near the ends of the doubletree behind the points, respectively, where the singletree pin-holes are located. ff indicate sin gletree-rests, which project outward beyond the loops at the ends of the bars 4o to form bearings for the singletrees B B.
The doubletree A can be stamped from a single piece of flat metal and then the connecting portions e 6 can be bent to bring the two bars a. a side by side, one above the 5 other-,as shown, with the singletree-space D between them, or the two bars may be made separately and the loops e e afterward attached thereto. The loops retain the doubletree-bars in their proper position and do not interfere with the desired swinging movement of the singletrees and serve for attaching stay-straps, as shown in Fig. 1.
The projecting singletree-bearings ff are in the same plane, respectively, with the doubletree-bars to which they attach, and they 5 5 form, together with the body of such bars on the other side of the singletree pin-hole, a bearing for the middle of the singletree, and when the singletrees are in place and the singletree pivot-pins g g are in place the whole constitutes a complete doubletree and singletrees, in which there is no tendency upon the part of the singletrees to twist the doubletree upon the tongue, and in which there is no superfluous material or unnecessary weight. The doubletree can be attached to the tongue H by the ordinary clevis and pin I, and the stay-straps .I can then be attached in the loops formed by the connecting portions 6 e',and the appliance is then ready ya for use.
I do not broadly claim that it is new to mount singletrees between two parallel bars; but I desire to claim the new specific simple structure shown, by which I accomplish the 7 objects specified.
, Now, having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The improved integral double-tree set forth comprising in combination, the two metal bars arranged side by side with the single-tree space between them, and provided with the single-tree pin holes and the clevis pin holes; and the two combined bar-connecting and stay strap loops arranged respectively near the ends of the bars welded thereto and connecting said bars together.
2. The improved integral double-tree set forth comprising in combination the two metal bars arranged side by side with the single-tree space between them, and provided with the single-tree pin holes and the clevis pin holes; the two combined bar-connecting and stay strap loops arranged, respectively, 5 immediately behind the single-tree pin-holes, respectively, near the ends of the bars welded thereto and connecting said bars together,
bars substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
OWEN MODERMOTT.
